Started as a side project within Dwolla but now launched publicly, Dwolla and Stripe have partnered to bring charitable donations and fundraising to the Reddit community. For the uninitiated, Reddit.com is a popular online community where people can post content, links to videos and images, and create sub-communities called sub-reddits around shared interests. The site has garnered both positive and negative media attention but some of its most honorable mentions have been centered on its users raising enormous funds for what they deem as worthwhile causes. In one such instance, Redditors donated over $100,000 to help an African orphanage build a protective wall and to improve its facilities after it was attacked by raiders. You can see more examples on this DailyDot.com post, or checkout the sub-reddits r/assistance, r/favors, and r/Random_Acts_of_Pizza.
The Dwolla and Stripe partnership hopes to make fundraising easier by allowing legitimate non-profit organizations to list themselves on redditdonate.com where redditors can browse charities and make donations. Additionally, moderators of sub-reddits will also be able to set up campaigns to collect money for verified non-profits.
Charities and Non-Profits that take part will experience the normal fees associated with Dwolla and Stripe accounts which are $0.25 for each Dwolla transaction over $10 (free if under $10) or 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction with Stripe. Dwolla does not support the use of credit cards, which accounts for the lower fee.
