LevelUp, an increasingly popular mobile payments and loyalty provider in the United States, and Heartland Payment Systems, a U.S. payment processor serving more than 250,000 merchants, have announced a joint partnership. Through the partnership, the companies hope to expand the reach of their mobile payment solutions, as well as overcome scalability challenges that typically come with mobile services.
“The biggest challenge facing mobile payment companies right now is scale,” said Chris Mahl, LevelUp’s chief revenue and strategy officer. ”LevelUp has been able to reach 1 million users and 5,000 merchants relatively quickly, but we need even wider consumer and merchant adoption before LevelUp hits the mainstream.”
The two have launched pilot programs in New York City, Boston, Louisville, Minneapolis and Madison, Wisconsin, and are now preparing to roll out a national payment solution in the coming months. Under the partnership agreement, Heartland’s sales force and current merchants will begin to incorporate LevelUp’s mobile payment and loyalty services in several roll-out phases. Heartland has also incorporated LevelUp’s services into its E3 point-of-sale terminal.
In return, LevelUp will leverage Heartland’s speed, authorization processes and settlement network to add value for customers and increase sales. The companies will also simultaneously promote white-labeled apps, payment solutions and loyalty programs for businesses.
“Heartland and LevelUp are both innovative companies with a shared vision and commitment to accelerate the shift from card payments to mobile payments,” said Ian Drysdale, Heartland’s president, network solutions group. “Our collective goal is to proactively expand market share while creating additional value at the point of sale for both merchants and consumers.”
