UPDATE 8/12/21: iPay appears to have changed its name to Planet Payment (planetpayment.com). We therefore will no longer update this review, and we plan to publish a review for Planet Payment in the near future.

iPay (ipay.com), like Authorize.net, is not a merchant account provider or credit card processor but, instead, a payment gateway provider. iPay is a product of Planet Payment, a data and payment processing company, and it appears that Planet Payment has recently shifted its branding to refer to iPay as the “Planet Payment Gateway.” Whether this marks the end of the iPay brand name is unclear, but merchants should be prepared to encounter either name. Planet Payment has a partnership with Global Payments, which is a credit card processor, so the iPay gateway is often packaged with a Global Payments merchant account for new merchants that do not currently accept credit cards. However, the iPay gateway can be purchased and used with almost any third-party merchant account if the merchant prefers. Planet Payment was founded in 1999 and is headquartered at 670 Long Beach Boulevard, Long Beach, New York 11561. Planet Payment's chairman, CEO, and president is Carl J. Williams.

Key Points

  • Sales & Marketing: iPay does not appear to hire independent sales agents and has not received any complaints about its sales practices.
  • Costs & Contract: iPay's pricing will depend on the merchant account provider it has been paired with.
  • Complaints & Service: iPay has received fewer than 10 public complaints.
  • BBB Rating: iPay has an “A+” rating with the Better Business Bureau and has received zero complaints in the last three years.
  • Rates & Fees: How Merchants Got The Best Rates With iPay

We are unable to locate any negative iPay reviews at this time, which is a solid indicator that the product isn’t a scam or a ripoff. It’s unlikely that the company will accumulate many complaints related to its payment processing due to the fact that it does not supply merchant accounts. However, iPay deserves commendation for not receiving any complaints related to its operation or usefulness. Merchants will be best served by doing their research and choosing a reputable merchant account provider in order to avoid a negative experience with iPay. The company offers phone and email support to its merchants.

Planet Payment currently has an “A+” rating with the BBB and is not showing accreditation. The company has received zero complaints and zero informal reviews in the past three years. In light of this clean complaint record, we agree with the BBB’s grade for iPay at this time.

iPay Fees, Rates & Costs

A Closer Look at The Contract

Cost & Fees Summary
Swiped Rate Variable
Keyed-in Rate Variable
Early Termination Fee Variable
PCI Compliance Fee Variable
Equipment Lease Terms Variable

There is very little publicly available information about the pricing and fees of iPay’s gateway. The company does not list its monthly or one-time fees on its website, and the per-transaction cost will depend entirely on the merchant account terms that apply to each individual merchant. There are no iPay complaints that mention excessive cost or hidden fees at this time, so we will assume that most of the company’s customers are satisfied with the product.

Upon watching a demo of iPay’s virtual terminal, we found the design to be rather outdated and non-intuitive; however, it is robust with many customizable features and settings. Unlike many of iPay’s competitors’ virtual terminals, The iPay virtual terminal cannot be paired with a USB credit card slider and is limited to only typed transactions. iPay’s competitive advantage is that it supports multi-currency transactions of dozens of different currencies. Overall, it is best suited for larger enterprises with an international presence.

iPay Employee Reviews & Sales Tacitcs

Should You Work For Them?

Jobs & Marketing Summary
Employs Independent Resellers No
Advertises Deceptive Rates No
Discloses All Important Terms No

iPay primarily markets itself through traditional advertising and partnerships with merchant account providers. There is no evidence that the company employs independent sales agents to market its product, and we cannot find any complaints that accuse the iPay sales staff of nondisclosure or misrepresentation. iPay does not list any rate quotes in its official materials because it does not set rates for the merchant accounts that are used in conjunction with its gateway. In our opinion, there is a very low risk of deception when signing up for an iPay gateway.

Our iPay Review Summary

Our Final Thoughts

iPay rated as a reliable payment gateway according to all available information. The product appears to be more of an enterprise payment solution rather than a small business payment solution, which may or may not be reflected in its pricing. Those interested in iPay should be directed to our Payment Planet review when it is published.
