Payment Processing for Invoice-Based Industries

BillingTree is a merchant account provider that specializes in merchant services aimed at businesses in the healthcare, collections, finance, B2B, energy, and automotive industries. The company was founded in 2003 and also operates under the name “Electronic Payment Providers, Inc.”. BillingTree also prides its business on a client-focused approach that tailors its payment processing services to the unique needs of a merchant. BillingTree allows merchants to accept payments through ACH, credit and debit, e-commerce, online invoicing, and text payments, depending on which optimizes efficiency for each merchant.

BillingTree Payment Gateway

The company offers merchants Payzr, its proprietary payment gateway and virtual terminal service. Payzr is HIPAA, SSAE, and PCI-compliant, ensuring security and protection of both the company and the customer. It is also the anchor of the Payzr portfolio of products, which also includes Payzr Virtual Terminal, Payzr IVR, Payzr Portal, and Payzr Portal Plus.

Acquired IPayX

In 2018 BillingTree acquired Ohio-based Internet Payment Exchange (IPayX). IPayX's website is no longer is in service and now forwards to BillingTree's Payrazr product platform, indicating a possible scale-down of the brand.

In May 2021, it was announced that BillingTree would be purchased by Repay Holdings Corporation, a vertical integration payment solutions company. The purchase is for $503 million, and the BillingTree brand has been absorbed into REPAY.

BillingTree Customer Reviews

Here's What Their Clients Say

Customer Reviews Summary
Total Online Complaints <10
Live Customer Support Yes
Most Common Complaint N/A

Low Complaint Total

We are able to find only a few negative BillingTree reviews at this time, which is a good indication that the company is not a scam or a ripoff. These BillingTree complaints refer to slow or unreachable customer service and appear to be isolated incidents. It is possible that some complaints intended for BillingTree are instead mistakenly filed against Electronic Payment Providers or the company’s backend credit card processor, but there is currently no evidence for this. If you have your own BillingTree review to make, please do so in the comments below.

BillingTree Lawsuits

In 2016, the company agreed to pay $178,000 in the settlement of a class-action lawsuit. The lawsuit alleged that the company processed debits from over 3,900 customer accounts to pay debts owed to high-interest lenders. The state of Vermont has made interest rates exceeding 24% outlawed.

BillingTree Customer Support Options

BillingTree advertises live customer support via phone and chat as well as an email address for ticketed support, and it seems that these channels sufficiently address customer issues in-house. BillingTree’s support team appears to function at a level similar to top payment processors for customer service.

BillingTree Online Ratings

Here's How They Rate Online

Online Ratings Summary
Total BBB Complaints 1

Clean Complaint Record

BillingTree currently has an “A-” rating with the Better Business Bureau and has been accredited since February 2013. The company has received 1 complaints to its BBB profile in the past 36 months. The 1 complaint was resolved to the satisfaction of the merchant.

What The Complaints Say

BillingTree has also received 1 informal complaint to its profile. The 1 review was positive and appears to be misfiled to the wrong company.

An “A” Performance Overall

BillingTree’s clean complaint record inclines us to agree with the BBB’s rating at this time. Merchants should note, however, that there are reasons to be skeptical of BBB ratings.

Potentially Variable Pricing

BillingTree does not provide its contract documentation on its website, and there is no public feedback regarding the BillingTree rates and fees at this time. It is therefore difficult to determine which pricing structures and recurring fees can be found in the standard BillingTree contract. BillingTree does not disclose the identity of its backend processor, but the company is almost certainly a reseller of another company’s merchant account contracts. It is also likely that BillingTree’s sales reps can alter rates and fees depending on each merchant’s size, business type, and processing history.

Virtual Terminal and Payment Gateway Pricing

In addition to its storefront payment processing services, BillingTree also dedicates a portion of its website to advertising its virtual terminal and payment gateway services, dubbed Payrazr. However,  pricing is not disclosed on those services. Additional BillingTree rates and fees, including gateway fees, technical support fees, batch fees, and additional transaction rates typically apply to these e-commerce services.

No Cause for Concern

Given the fact that there are zero Billingree complaints related to BillingTree’s contract terms at this time, we will assign it an “A” rating in this category. However, there is no clear indication of whether or not BillingTree’s rates can compete with the cheapest merchant account providers. If you have any specific knowledge of the standard BillingTree contract (including any early termination fees or PCI compliance fees), please share that information in the comment section below this review.

BillingTree Employee Reviews & Sales Tacitcs

Should You Work For Them?

Jobs & Marketing Summary
Employs Independent Resellers No
Advertises Deceptive Rates No
Discloses All Important Terms No

No Sales Complaints

BillingTree appears to utilize a combination of traditional advertising, strategic partnerships, sub-ISOs, and an in-house sales team to market its products and services. There is no evidence at this time that the company employs a team of independently contracted sales agents, and we cannot find any BillingTree reviews that accuse its sales reps of deceptive behavior.

No Misleading Quotes

Additionally, the company does not list any misleading rate quotes or unrealistic guarantees in its official marketing materials. We have therefore assigned it an “A” rating in this category. If you suspect, however, that BillingTree is overcharging you, you can double-check your monthly bill with a third-party statement audit.

A Solid Choice For Invoice-Based Business Types

BillingTree rates as a reliable merchant services provider for Net 30 and invoice-based businesses. The company is showing a very low complaint total across all consumer protection websites and does not appear to engage in unethical advertising policies. Merchants who are researching the company should note that its name is occasionally spelled as two words, “Billing Tree.”
