Conversion Payment Systems Review

Conversion Payment Systems Overview

An Apparent DBA of Eschelon Merchant Services

Conversion Payment Systems is a merchant account provider lacking much publicly accessible information. Upon researching the company, it appears that it may operate as another DBA of Eschelon Merchant Services, as may also be the case with PassThru Pay and Wholesale Conversion Payment. This determination has been made due to the fact that the language used on each company’s website is identical in certain sections. Each DBA offers a different focus to its approach to merchant services.

Conversion Payment Systems offers 2 distinctly different types of merchant accounts. The first is a conventional merchant account which uses interchange-plus pricing, the latter is one which utilizes a cash discount program. Interchange pricing is the most transparent pricing structure available in the merchant services industry. This type of pricing is desirable because it relies upon pre-determined rates set by debit cards, allowing merchants to understand the mark up being applied to their rates. Consequently, interchange-plus pricing models are the most desirable option for merchants. Cash discount programs differ in that they divert the cost of a transaction to customers not paying in cash. This is done by adding a fixed percentage to the price of all goods in a store but waives the cost for customers paying in cash. Although this alleviates merchants from the cost of payment processing, its impact on the customer can have an undesirable effect on a merchant’s overall sales. Cash discount programs should not be confused with surcharge-based zero fee processing programs.

In addition to its in-store, e-commerce, and mobile payment processing, the Conversion Payment System websites advertise other services. The company also provides loyalty/gift card processing, Apple Pay integration, and payment processing for events.

Unclear Contract Terms

While the Conversation Payment Systems website dedicates a section to the company’s pricing, it still doesn’t provide much information. What is made clear is that the company offers interchange-plus pricing, the most transparent rate structure available in the industry. What is not clear on that note is how much, if any, these interchange rates are marked up. In addition to basic interchange rates, merchant accounts typically tack on a small percentage increase and/or a transaction fee. Conversation Payment Systems does not disclose is it adds on those markups, instead the pricing portion of the website offers merchants an explanation about how non-qualified, mid-qualified, and non-qualified tiered rates work and how interchange-plus pricing is a better alternative to those. Surcharges tacked onto credit and debit transactions as part of its cash discount program are not disclosed either.

The fees and terms of a contract with Conversation Payment Systems are not made available on the company’s website. Any early termination fees, PCI compliance fee, monthly minimum, annual fee, etc. are not disclosed. Some merchant accounts offer month-to-month pricing plans with no cancellation fees. While they often charge monthly fees or slightly higher rates, the lack of a long-term commitment is a major advantage for many merchants. However, it is unlikely that this is the contract structure Conversion Payment Systems takes as the advantages of month-to-month pricing are hugely appealing and merchant accounts offering them clearly advertise their month-to-month contract terms.

Virtual Terminal and Payment Gateway Pricing

In addition to its storefront payment processing services, Wholesale Conversion Payments also dedicates a portion of its website that advertises its virtual terminal and payment gateway services. However, pricing on either of those services is not disclosed. Additional fees, including gateway fees, technical support fees, batch fees, and additional transaction rates may apply to these e-commerce services.

Above Average Pricing Based on Rates Alone

While most of the Wholesale Conversion Payments contract terms are unclear, the lone disclosure of its use of interchange-plus pricing is a huge positive. With that pricing model, merchants at least benefit from being able to understand what they are being charged for payment processing without any unexpected rate hikes. However, the lack of other contract terms, namely fees associated with the merchant account as well as the duration of a contract, knocks what would otherwise be an “A” rating down to a “B” overall.

Low Complaint Total

We have no found any complaints left about Conversion Payment Systems. Given the lack of available information on the company through third party websites, it is unclear how this reflects on the quality of the company’s merchant services. This same issue exists with PassThru Pay and Wholesale Conversion Payments, other companies that appear to be DBAs of Eschelon Merchant Services. It should be noted that we have located more than 30 complaints about Eschelon Merchant Services on this and other consumer protection websites. Some of those complaints even express concern that the company is a ripoff or a scam.

Conversion Payment Systems Lawsuits

We have not found any outstanding class-action lawsuits or FTC complaints filed against Conversion Payment Systems. Dissatisfied merchants who wish to pursue a non-litigious course of action against the company should consider reporting it to the relevant supervisory organizations.

Conversion Payment Systems Customer Support Options

Conversion Payment Systems offers live phone and email support to all of its merchants. While the company clearly provides a phone number and email address, the phone support could not be reached at the time this article was written when it was reviewed for the quality of its service. However, the content of the available complaints suggests that these options do not perform at the level of top payment processors for great customer service.

Truth In Marketing & Advertising

Key Points

Employs Independent Resellers No
Advertises Deceptive Rates No
Discloses All Important Terms No

Inside and Outside Sales Team

Though Conversion Payment Systems employs an in-house sales team, the company also chooses to operate an ISO and independent sales agent program. There are no available complaints regarding the company’s sales practices, in-house and otherwise. However, there is a complete lack of complaints and reviews about the company on the whole. This absence of complaints makes it difficult to evaluate the company’s sales practices.

Little-To-No Insight into Rates and Fees

While Conversion Payment Systems makes it clear that it offers interchange-plus pricing and a cash discount program, it veils the possible markups on interchange and surcharges applied to non-cash payments in secrecy. While this certainly is not tantamount to the company advertising deceptive rates, it makes it difficult for merchants to make an informed decision. Furthermore, additional fees, the length of a contract term, and the possibility of a conventional tiered pricing models are not disclosed by the company.

Referral Partnerships

In addition to independent sales agents, Conversion Payment Systems also advertises a referral partner program. This program provides merchants, businesses, or others with a referral fee for new merchants that sign up through the company through referrals from partners. While these partners do not operate in the same way an ISO and sales agent does, it provides an avenue to merchants who are using Wholesale Conversion Payments merchant services to monetize their association with the company through referrals.

An Average Rating, at Best

The lack of readily available reviews and complaints about Conversion Payment Systems sales practices is difficult to evaluate. On one hand, the absence of complaints seems like an innately positive factor. However, the absence of any recognition of the company across different merchant and consumer review websites is concerning. However, based on the information provided, Conversion Payment Systems is awarded an average “C” rating in this category.

Our Opinion of Conversion Payment Systems

Difficult to Assess the Quality of this Merchant Account Provider

At first glance, the interchange-plus pricing offered by Conversion Payment Systems stands out. While that aspect of the company’s merchant services is positive, a more in-depth analysis of the company creates more questions than answers. Merchants preferring a cash discount program may benefit from the services offered by Conversion Payment Systems have reason to inquire.

However, any merchants contacting the company should act in consideration of a few issues that we encountered when writing this review. For one, the organizational structure of the company is unclear. The fact that the company appears to operate different dbas is a red flag, as is whether or not Conversion Payment Systems itself is just a piece of a larger organization. Furthermore, the lack of disclosures about the duration of its contracts and any associated fees makes it difficult to assess the quality of this merchant account provider.

We rely on your feedback about Conversion Payment Systems to keep this review accurate and up-to-date. Please take a minute to tell us about your experience. We and the small business owners of this world thank you!

Why I'm Qualified to Write About Credit Card Processing and Merchant Account Services

I'm a former credit card processing sales director who left the industry because I didn't like how it takes advantage of small business owners. It feeds like a leech on businesses and thrives by imposing fees that are nearly impossible to comprehend. Seeing a need for change, I left and built this website help business owners better understand the industry, research merchant services providers, and get refunds of excessive merchant account fees. My experience of working "behind the curtain" in the industry, and using that knowledge for good, has resulted in millions of dollars returned to hard-working small business owners as well as enterprise-level companies.

From the time that I starting working in the merchant services industry to when I left to create this website, I've been on the pulse of payments for nearly 15 years. It didn't seem fair to keep this "insider" knowledge to myself. To lift the fog, I've reviewed hundreds of companies, read thousands of user reviews, and learned the pricing tricks of every provider. If you have questions about credit card processing, you can find the answers on this website.

How I Can Help You

I specialize in helping businesses get refunds of excessive fees and have recovered $1,567,184 this year alone! Submit a recent statement below to find out if you are getting overcharged. I'll take a look at it for free. If I find fees that can be refunded, hire me on contigency. I only get compensated if I put money back into your pocket.
