Background and Roles
Andrew Kortina is the co-founder of Venmo, the popular mobile payment platform he created alongside Iqram Magdon-Ismail in 2009. According to our review of Venmo, the platform enables users to send and receive money through a mobile app linked to their bank accounts. Kortina and Magdon-Ismail met as freshman roommates at the University of Pennsylvania, where Kortina studied computer science. The idea for Venmo grew out of everyday frustrations with splitting payments and sending money between friends. Venmo was acquired by Braintree in 2012, and PayPal subsequently acquired Braintree in 2013. Kortina has since co-founded fin.com and continues to work on technology projects and write essays on technology and society.
