Before You Sign with Pineapple Payments: Read This Review

We take our role in providing guidance and education regarding the card payment industry very seriously. At our own expense, we have vigorously defended our right to continue expose unethical and predatory practices in the industry, successfully defeating every attempt to silence us. However, fending off frivolous lawsuits is costly. To sustain these efforts, one of the ways we generate revenue is through affiliate partnerships with ethical providers. This means that some of our outgoing links connect business owners to trustworthy, low-cost payment processors, which is what most of our readers seek. We see this revenue channel as a win-win-win for everyone involved. Business owners find good processors, processors get good clients, and we are able to continue to provide a valuable service to the small business community. We also recommend and link to many services that do not compensate us. Our priority is to guide you to the best solutions for your needs, regardless of potential revenue. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us.

About Pineapple Payments

Pineapple Payments Homepage

Founded in 2016, Pineapple Payments is a merchant account provider offering a full range of terminal and software-based payment processing options.

In October of 2017, Pineapple Payments announced its acquisition of Payline Data. The acquisition of that company means Pineapple Payments will provide its services to nearly 10,000 merchants with a combined annual processing volume of over $2 billion. Despite being a relatively new company, its advanced payment technology and experienced executive leadership have allowed the company to flourish in the 3 years or so it has been in business. Pineapple Payments also acquired Boston-based Beacon Payments and fellow Pittsburgh-based merchant account provider CardChamp in 2019.

In 2021, Pineapple Payments was acquired by mega-processor Fiserv. Fiserv appears to operate the company under its own brand.

Products & Merchant Services

Payment Processing

Pineapple Payments processes all major debit and credit cards, utilizing Worldpay, TSYS, and First Data (Fiserv) to provide omnichannel payment processing for merchants of all sizes. Additionally, they support ACH payments, mobile payments, and e-commerce transactions.

Legal Inquiries into Pineapple Payments

There are currently no recorded class-action lawsuits or FTC complaints against Pineapple Payments. For those who may have unresolved issues with Pineapple Payments but prefer a non-confrontational resolution, reporting to relevant authorities can be an effective course of action.

Pineapple Payments Support Accessibility

Unlike some competitors, Pineapple Payments does not offer a dedicated email address or direct phone line specifically for customer service inquiries. Support for resellers exists, but this is not directly beneficial to end customers seeking assistance. The company does provide general phone support and a chat option for client assistance, but it is important to note that these are not available 24/7, with availability limited to standard business hours. This limited accessibility indicates room for improvement in customer support compared to leading merchant account providers.

Google Maps Rating for Pineapple Payments

Pineapple Payments has a 2.6 out of 5 star rating based on 17 user reviews on Google Maps.

Positive Feedback

So far this has been a great software for our payments I store and online. Easy to learn and great help from the Pineapple company .

Negative Feedback

Avoid, avoid, avoid! I originally had a contract with Payline which was subsequently sold to Pineapple Payments and have had nothing but hassle since then. Extra fees added every month. I call, wait weeks for a response and then may or may not have success with reversal of the charges. I recently cancelled my account but am still getting charged a “minimum bill adjustment” for not using the services! Except my original contract specified no minimum bill payment in the first place.

Processing Rates & Fees

Pineapple Payments Pricing

Pineapple Payments has not publicly disclosed its rates, fees, merchant agreement, or contract terms. Customer feedback indicates the availability of interchange-plus and flat-rate pricing options. Through partnerships with Worldpay, TSYS, and First Data for backend processing, Pineapple Payments likely inherits and passes on the fees characteristic of these providers, in addition to Pineapple’s own transaction fees.

Typically, contracts with Worldpay, TSYS, and First Data span three years with one-year automatic renewal clauses, including PCI compliance and early termination fees that may reach up to $25 monthly and $495, respectively. Additionally, contracts may feature non-cancellable equipment leases through First Data Global Leasing.

Virtual Terminal and Payment Gateway Pricing

Pineapple Payments also promotes its virtual terminal and payment gateway services, with specific pricing dependent on the backend processor’s contract a client selects. Expect additional costs such as gateway fees, technical support fees, batch fees, and other transaction-related charges for these e-commerce solutions.

Transparent Rates with the Possibility of High Fees

The provision of interchange-plus pricing by Pineapple Payments offers merchants clear and competitive rates, but this advantage may be counterbalanced by potentially significant fees associated with its backend processors. For alternatives that might offer more favorable terms, business owners are recommended to explore our curated list of the top merchant account providers.

Employee Reviews & Sales Practices

A Company Hiring Independent Resellers

According to the company’s website, Pineapple Payments hires independent resellers. The company has separate programs for agents, ISOs, and ISVs. Each program offers comprehensive training and support that maintains the integrity of these independent resellers.  Unsurprisingly, there are no available Pineapple Payments reviews indicating that they engage in deceptive sales practices.

This compares favorably to our list of best credit card processors.

No Deceptive Advertising

To its credit, Pineapple Payments does not appear to engage in any deceptive advertising strategies in its official materials. However, a pricing schedule or copy of its standard contract is not readily available. Given its comprehensive effort to ensure quality partnerships with its independent resellers, we award the company a grade of an “A.” If you suspect that Pineapple Payments is charging you undisclosed fees, we recommend seeking an independent statement audit to find and eliminate hidden charges.
