Company Overview

Founded in 2016, Pineapple Payments is a merchant account provider offering a full range of terminal and software-based payment processing options.

In October of 2017, Pineapple Payments announced its acquisition of Payline Data. The acquisition of that company means Pineapple Payments will provide its services to nearly 10,000 merchants with a combined annual processing volume of over $2 billion. Despite being a relatively new company, its advanced payment technology and experienced executive leadership have allowed the company to flourish in the 3 years or so it has been in business. Pineapple Payments also acquired Boston-based Beacon Payments and fellow Pittsburgh-based merchant account provider CardChamp in 2019.

In 2021, Pineapple Payments was acquired by mega-processor Fiserv. Fiserv appears to operate the company under its own brand.

Pineapple Payments Payment Processing

Pineapple Payments processes all major debit and credit cards. The company utilizes Worldpay, TSYS, and First Data (Fiserv) to offer merchants of all sizes omnichannel payment processing services. In addition to payment processing, the company also offers Quickbooks integration services. That facet of the company's services allows merchants to set up recurring billing, AR/AP tracking, and customized payment pages such as bill-pay portals. They also offer ACH payments, mobile, and e-commerce.

POS System Service by Pineapple Payments

Pineapple Payments offers a feature-rich Point of Sale (POS) system service that goes beyond traditional payment processing. The solution is designed to streamline the payment experience, making it faster and easier for businesses and their customers.

Mobile POS Service: Payments on the Go

The mobile POS service by Pineapple Payments allows businesses to accept payments from virtually anywhere. This is particularly beneficial for businesses operating on the go, such as food trucks, home service providers, or market vendors. With this service, credit and debit card payments can be processed using a mobile device, making transactions more convenient for everyone involved.

E-Commerce Payment Processing

Pineapple Payments recognizes the growing demand for online shopping and has tailored its e-commerce payment processing accordingly. The company provides a secure online payment gateway that allows businesses to safely and efficiently handle online transactions, meeting the needs of modern consumers who prefer the convenience of online shopping.

Virtual Terminal Service for Remote Transactions

With Pineapple Payments' virtual terminal service, businesses can process credit card transactions remotely. This feature allows businesses to manually enter card details into a secure web-based system, making it an excellent option for phone or mail-order businesses.

Integrated Software for Streamlined Operations

Finally, Pineapple Payments provides integrated software solutions that help businesses manage and streamline their operations. These tools not only support payment processing, but they also facilitate functions like inventory management, customer relationship management (CRM), and data analysis, helping businesses to operate more effectively and efficiently.

Pineapple Payments Lawsuits and Fines

We have not found any outstanding class-action lawsuits or FTC complaints filed against Pineapple Payments. Dissatisfied clients who wish to pursue a non-litigious course of action against the company should consider reporting it to the relevant supervisory organizations.

Pineapple Payments Customer Support Options

Pineapple Payments offers no dedicated email address or phone number for direct customer service. Resellers are given support outlets, however, that is not of any benefit to businesses in need of assistance. The company’s general phone number and chat do include an option for client support, however, they do not offer 24/7 assistance. Instead, support is only available during the company’s standard business hours. It does not appear that the company assimilates the customer support of companies whose services it resells.

Though the company has a clean complaint record, the lack of comprehensive customer service is far from the standard set by merchant account providers who excel in this area.

Pineapple Payments Fees, Rates & Costs

A Closer Look at The Contract

Cost & Fees Summary
Cancellation Penalties Yes
Monthly & Annual Fees Yes
Processing Rates Interchange-Plus
Equipment Leasing Yes

Pineapple Payments Pricing

Pineapple Processing rates and fees are not disclosed, nor are its merchant agreement or contract terms. Client reviews of the company reflect that it does offer interchange-plus and flat-rate pricing options. Given the company’s reliance on Worldpay, TSYS, and First Data for its backend processing, it is likely that it resells their contacts and that businesses may incur many of the fees associated with them, independent of the transaction fees unique to Pineapple Payments.

Standard Worldpay, TSYS, and First Data offer multi-year contracts, typically lasting 3 years with automatic renewal periods of 1 year. Those contacts also include PCI compliance and early termination fees that can be as high as $25 per month and $495, respectively. Additionally, clients may be subject to non-cancellable equipment lease terms through First Data Global Leasing.

Virtual Terminal and Payment Gateway Pricing

In addition to its storefront payment processing services, Pineapple Payments also dedicates a portion of its website to advertising its virtual terminal and payment gateway services. However, pricing on either of those services likely will depend on which resold contract a client signs up for through the company. Additional rates and fees, including gateway fees, technical support fees, batch fees, and additional transaction rates typically apply to these e-commerce services.

Transparent Rates with the Possibility of High fees

While Pineapple Payments’ ability to offer merchants interchange-plus pricing provides them with affordable and transparent rates, that benefit is offset by the company’s potentially high fees through its backend processors.

A Company Hiring Independent Resellers

According to the company’s website, Pineapple Payments hires independent resellers. The company has separate programs for agents, ISOs, and ISVs. Each program offers comprehensive training and support that maintains the integrity of these independent resellers.  Unsurprisingly, there are no available Pineapple Payments reviews indicating that they engage in deceptive sales practices.

This compares favorably to our list of best credit card processors.

No Deceptive Advertising

To its credit, Pineapple Payments does not appear to engage in any deceptive advertising strategies in its official materials. However, a pricing schedule or copy of its standard contract is not readily available. Given its comprehensive effort to ensure quality partnerships with its independent resellers, we award the company a grade of an “A.” If you suspect that Pineapple Payments is charging you undisclosed fees, we recommend seeking an independent statement audit to find and eliminate hidden charges.
