Company Overview

SkyTab is a solution for the food service industry that combines a mobile point-of-sale (POS) with integrated payments. The system is a product of Shift4 Payments, a merchant account provider created in 2018 and the parent company of Harbortouch.

Shift4 has offered SkyTab products since around 2019, but in 2022, the company announced a major expansion of the program. In fact, there are some indicators that Shift4 may absorb their popular Harbortouch POS system (which has a focus on the larger hospitality industry) into SkyTab. As of now, the two operate as separate entities, but we will update as more information comes out.

Mobile Point-of-Sale

SkyTab is a portable restaurant device that incorporates POS functionality. Servers or staff can take orders right at the table, streamlining the order process. The device can also print receipts, making it a fully functional, mobile POS terminal.

Integrated Payments

SkyTab integrates seamlessly with a restaurant’s payment processing system. It accepts all major credit and debit cards, as well as contactless payment methods like Apple Pay and Google Pay. The device is equipped with advanced encryption and tokenization technology to ensure secure transactions.

Order and Pay at the Table

One of the key features of SkyTab is its ability to allow customers to order and pay at the table. Customers can view the menu, place orders, and pay their bill directly from the device.

Customer Engagement and Feedback

In addition to its core functionalities, SkyTab also provides features for customer engagement. After a transaction, customers can be prompted to rate their service and provide feedback directly on the device. SkyTab can send digital receipts to customers via email, an eco-friendly alternative to traditional paper receipts. This feature also enables businesses to gather customer email addresses for future marketing purposes, provided customers opt in.

Online Ordering and Delivery Integration

SkyTab can also integrate with a restaurant’s online ordering and delivery systems. This is meant to help streamline operations, keeping all orders in one place to help with accurate, timely delivery to customers.

Integration of SkyTab with Other POS Systems

An additional feature of SkyTab is its compatibility with other POS systems, including the Harbortouch POS system, also a Shift4 Payments product. This allows for a seamless integration of mobile and stationary POS functionalities within a business.

Location & Ownership

Shift4 Payments is headquartered at 2202 N. Irving St., Allentown, PA. Shift4 Payments is a registered ISO/MSP of Citizens Bank, N.A., Providence, RI, and Merrick Bank, South Jordan, UT., and Jared Isaacman is the CEO and Don Isaacman is the president of Shift4 Payment and of Harbortouch.

New Company, Few Reviews

As SkyTab is new, we have found very few SkyTab reviews, none of which raise in significant alarms. However, we have located a number of negative Shift4 Payments and Harbortouch reviews. Business owners who are considering SkyTab may want to conduct further research of Shift4 Payments.

SkyTab Lawsuits and Fines

We have not located any lawsuits directly related to SkyTab, though Shift4 has been named in a number of recent lawsuits:

  • In 2018, Shift4 Payments became the target of an antitrust lawsuit that accuses the company of monopolizing the payment interface and merchant account services market for mid-sized table service restaurants by cutting out other independent payment processors. It appears this case was terminated in 2019, but was shortly after reopened with few details going forward. This case is yet to reach a resolution.
  • In 2021, Labaton Sucharow announced it was looking into Shift4 for potential breaches of duty and security violations.
  • 2022 saw Smelson v. Shift4 Payments LLC, which was a class-action lawsuit filed against Shift4 Payments LLC, a payment processing company. The lawsuit alleged that Shift4 Payments LLC violated California law by charging businesses unauthorized fees for credit card transactions. The plaintiffs claimed that Shift4 Payments LLC misled them about the fees and failed to disclose the additional charges. The lawsuit sought damages and injunctive relief on behalf of the class of businesses affected. The case was settled for an undisclosed amount, with Shift4 Payments LLC agreeing to refund the unauthorized fees and improve its disclosures and billing practices in the future.

Dissatisfied merchants who wish to pursue a non-litigious course of action against the company should consider reporting it to the relevant supervisory organizations.

No Profile

SkyTab does not have its own profile with the BBB. However, Shift4 Payments is showing an “A+” and has been accredited since 2013. Shift4 has had 179 complaints in the last 3 years.

What Merchant Say

Shift4 has also received 20 reviews in the last 3 years, all but 1 of which is negative. Many of the reviews are about the back-end of payments, however some do mention Shift4’s POS systems. The most recent such review mentions issues with cost:

Whatever you do, do NOT sign up with Shift4 or ***********. They are a total nightmare from A to Z! Shop around and get plenty of quotes; you will find many other companies that give better service for much cheaper rates; this type of service does not have to be local to get great service. I also used ************* POS system; again, a nightmare and had to return it. I don’t know how they stay in business. Seriously… take my advice and save yourself a lot of money and a lot of headaches.

Equipment leases can be one of the most costly contract terms in any contract.

No Grade

Since most of the complaints and reviews for Shift4 are not for SkyTab and it is difficult to know whether the ones that mention a POS system are for SkyTab or Harbortouch, we will not be including the BBB’s reports in our score.

One Monthly Fee

SkyTab’s primary draw outside of its technology is that it claims to offer its services for one simple monthly fee of $29.99 per month with nothing out of pocket to get started. In fact, they offer free installation and a free demo.

This is what SkyTab claims to offer for $29.99 per month:

  • POS software, including all future software updates
  • POS hardware, with a lifetime warranty
  • 24/7 customer support
  • Cloud-based back office reporting and POS management
  • A robust mobile app to access your reporting and analytics

As SkyTab is a very new product in the credit card processing and POS world, we have yet to receive a contract or any SkyTab reviews to verify this claim, but if it holds true and does not feature any hidden fees or contract stipulations, it represents an incredible value for restaurants needing a POS system. In fact, it would represent one of the best contracts available in the industry. If you have a SkyTab contract available or can report on dealing with the company, we would greatly appreciate a the information in our comment section below.

SkyTab POS Options

SkyTab claims that the $29.99 per month covers anything the customer need, including its hardware. SkyTab’s current POS hardware offerings are as follows.

  • SkyTab POS – A desktop tablet-like POS system with full functionality and integrated customer display.
  • SkyTab Mobile – A smaller payment device that can swipe cards and read card chips, designed for tableside and curbside use. Also features mobile ordering.
  • SkyTab Glass – An 8” complete mobile POS device meant to be carried by servers.
  • Kitchen Display System – A 22” touchscreen FOH to BOH solution meant to convey orders and other information immediately between both parts of a restaurant.

Your Agent’s Word Is Not The Final Word

Shift4’s use of independent sales agents means that transaction rates and fees may vary from agent to agent. A representative of the company confirmed in the comment section of our Shift4 review that any verbal guarantees made by sales agents will not overrule the language in the company’s contract, so clients are advised to trust the documentation above an agent’s word. Multiple business owners have described a situation in which a sales agent verbally agreed to waive or alter certain fees and then failed to follow through on those changes. There are also multiple claims that agents failed to disclose the contract length and early termination fee associated with the company’s POS agreement for its other systems. If you suspect that you may be paying too many hidden fees, we recommend obtaining a cost analysis from an independent fee reduction service.

A New Grade for New Contract Terms

Shift4 Payments’ approach to other POS sales has received mixed reviews. The basis of most issues with the company’s previous terms and conditions primarily concern costly early termination fees, which should not be an issue with SkyTab. Since Shift4 Payments has revised its terms and conditions for its other merchant agreements and POS systems, we award the company a “B” in this category for now. We always encourage merchants to check out our list of the providers of the best merchant accounts.

No Sales Complaints

SkyTab appears to primarily rely on conventional advertising and a network of resellers to market its services. The company hands over its credit card processing pricing to its parent company and does not appear to employ a team of independent sales agents. As a result, there is a very low likelihood of encountering unethical sales tactics from SkyTab. This is confirmed by the overall lack of negative SkyTab reviews related to the company’s salesforce, though this is also in part due to the product’s short time in business.

No Deceptive Advertising

Like most other POS providers, SkyTab markets itself primarily through an in-house sales staff, a referral program, and resellers. Many businesses will find SkyTab marketed through them in coordination with a Shift4 account, so business owners are encouraged to read our Shift4 review. There are currently no SkyTab reviews related to unexpected costs, and the company does not publicly list any promotions or rate quotes that we consider to be deceptive. If you suspect that SkyTab has misrepresented your rates and fees, please let us know in the comment section below.

Our SkyTab Review Summary

Our Final Thoughts

As a new product by Shift4, SkyTab rates as a reliable point-of-sale credit card processing system for restaurants at this time. The company’s products appear to be on-par with the leading edge of the industry and its pricing, if as-advertised, could be industry-best. It also appears to offer exceptional customer service options. Since Shift4 is the underlying payment processor, business owners will want to scrutinize the terms of their agreement through SkyTab and compare with top iPad POS options and best merchant services providers for restaurants in order to obtain the best deal.
