Founded in 1998, Approval Payment Solutions offers debit and credit card processing, check services, point-of-sale equipment, and gift and loyalty programs. APS also offers special solutions for supermarkets, restaurants, educational entities, utility companies, insurance providers, and more. Approval Payment Solutions is a registered ISO/MSP of First National Bank of Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska. The company is located at 120 W Locust St, Boonville, Indiana 47601-1520.

Approval Payment Sales & Marketing Tactics | A

Approval Payment Solutions appears to utilize strategic partnerships and independent sales agents to market its services. The use of independent sales agents can often result in an elevated complaint rate for a company, as these sales representatives are usually motivated to sign merchants up for the most expensive contract terms possible. We are currently able to locate one Approval Payment Solutions complaint that describes aggressive sales tactics and nondisclosure of contract terms, and the company does not appear to engage in deceptive advertising strategies at this time.

Approval Payment Costs & Contract Terms | C

Approval Payment Solutions appears to offer a three-year agreement with automatic renewal for two-year terms. There is also an undisclosed early termination fee associated with Approval Payment Solutions contracts, although this amount is likely to be close to the standard $250-$295 amount offered by Vantiv. We are currently unable to locate any mention of PCI Compliance fees or monthly minimum fees, but it is likely that these are included in the company’s contract as well. According to the Better Business Bureau, the company also appears to lock its credit card terminals to prevent “slamming,” which can lead to some frustration among merchants who don’t understand why their terminal is locked. Overall, the company’s contract terms appear to be squarely within the average industry amounts, and we are therefore awarding Approval Payment Solutions a “C” at this time.

Approval Payment Complaints & Service | A

We are currently able to locate only one non-BBB Approval Payment Solutions complaint, and this complaint stops short of calling the company a ripoff or a scam. The merchant in this case reports aggressive, deceptive sales tactics by an agent and poor customer service when trying to correct the situation. The complaint was posted in 2011 and appears to be an isolated incident. It is worth noting that because Approval Payment Solutions is partnered with Vantiv, some complaints intended for Approval Payment Solutions might get redirected to the online profiles of the larger company. The Approval Payment Solutions website lists dedicated phone numbers and email addresses for customer support, but it’s unclear whether these support channels lead to Approval or to Vantiv.

Approval Payment BBB Report | B- (CPO Adjusted)

Approval Payment Solutions is an accredited business with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). As of this review, the company has a “B+” rating with the BBB and has had 18 complaints filed against it in the last 36 months. Twelve of the complaints stemmed from problems with products or services, five from billing or collection issues, and one from advertising or sales issues. Of the total complaints, APS successfully resolved 11. The remaining seven complaints were not resolved to the customer’s satisfaction. Taking into consideration the company’s relatively small size and average resolution ratio, we have adjusted the BBB’s rating to a “B-” for the purposes of this review.

Bottom Line

Approval Payment Solutions rates as an average merchant services provider according to our rating system. The company’s overall rating is negatively impacted by its BBB profile, its hiring practices, and its apparent contract terms, while its low complaint volume on other consumer protection websites helped to raise its overall score. Merchants are encouraged to read their contract terms carefully and inquire about any incomplete or confusing language.

I operate a small nonprofit organization which used Approval Payment Solutions for more than 4 years. We did not realize that buried in the fine print of their contract is an automatic renewal for 2 years at a time subject to a cancellation fee. When we switched our services this spring to a more affordable company, Approval Payment Solutions took a $375 fee out of our bank account for early cancellation. Well shame on us for not reading the contract more carefully or remembering terms buried in fine print that we signed off on four years ago. But shame on them for engaging in a practice which is sneaky at best. We felt totally ripped off. We did business with this company for four years and they made a good profit off of us. I would not use them again and I would not recommend them to others. I realize that this is a practice that lots of companies are starting to use to lock you into contracts long term, but I consider it deceptive and a poor business practice.
