Sales & Marketing | A

Key Points – Sales & Marketing
Uses independent resellers? Yes
Promotes deceptive rate quotes? No
Discloses all important terms? No

Approval Payment Solutions appears to utilize strategic partnerships and independent sales agents to market its services. The use of independent sales agents can often result in an elevated complaint rate for a company, as these sales representatives are usually motivated to sign merchants up for the most expensive contract terms possible. We are currently able to locate one Approval Payment Solutions complaint from 2011 that describes aggressive sales tactics and nondisclosure of contract terms. To its credit, the company does not appear to engage in deceptive advertising strategies in its official materials.

Costs & Contract | C

Key Points – Costs & Contract Terms
Swiped rate: Variable
Keyed-in rate: Variable
Termination fee: $375
PCI compliance fee: Variable
Equipment lease: Variable

Approval Payment Solutions appears to offer a three-year agreement with automatic renewal for two-year terms. There is also an undisclosed early termination fee associated with Approval Payment Solutions contracts, although this amount is likely to be close to the standard $250-$295 amount offered by Vantiv. We are currently unable to locate any mention of PCI Compliance fees or monthly minimum fees, but it is likely that these are included in the company’s contract as well. According to the Better Business Bureau, the company also appears to lock its credit card terminals to prevent “slamming,” which can lead to some frustration among merchants who don’t understand why their terminal is locked.

One merchant complaint in the comment section of this review cites a $375 early termination fee, while a complaint on another review website mentions a long-term equipment lease. Overall, the company’s contract terms appear to be squarely within the average industry parameters, and we are therefore awarding Approval Payment Solutions a “C” at this time.

Complaints & Service | A

Key Points – Complaints & Service
Total complaints: <10
Live customer support: Yes
Most common complaint: N/A

We are currently able to locate only two non-BBB Approval Payment Solutions complaints, and neither complaint calls the company a ripoff or a scam. One complainant reports deceptive sales tactics by an agent and poor customer service when trying to correct the situation. Another complainant was charged a $375 early termination fee that they were not expecting. It is worth noting that because Approval Payment Solutions is partnered with Vantiv, some complaints intended for Approval Payment Solutions might get redirected to the online profiles of the larger company. The Approval Payment Solutions website lists dedicated phone numbers and email addresses for customer support, but it’s unclear whether these support channels lead to Approval or to Vantiv.

Approval Payment Solutions rates as an average merchant services provider according to our rating system. The company’s overall rating is negatively impacted by its BBB profile and its apparent contract terms, while its low complaint volume on this and other consumer protection websites helped to raise its overall score. Merchants are encouraged to read their contract terms carefully and inquire about any incomplete or confusing language.

I operate a small nonprofit organization which used Approval Payment Solutions for more than 4 years. We did not realize that buried in the fine print of their contract is an automatic renewal for 2 years at a time subject to a cancellation fee. When we switched our services this spring to a more affordable company, Approval Payment Solutions took a $375 fee out of our bank account for early cancellation. Well shame on us for not reading the contract more carefully or remembering terms buried in fine print that we signed off on four years ago. But shame on them for engaging in a practice which is sneaky at best. We felt totally ripped off. We did business with this company for four years and they made a good profit off of us. I would not use them again and I would not recommend them to others. I realize that this is a practice that lots of companies are starting to use to lock you into contracts long term, but I consider it deceptive and a poor business practice.
