Three-Year Agreement

According to employee reviews and a copy of the Mainstream Merchant Services contract, the company offers a three-year contract that automatically renews for successive two-year terms unless canceled via written notice at least 30 days before the expiration of the initial term. Though the contract contains no pricing schedule, as a reseller, Mainstream Merchant Services rates may resemble that of TSYS. Typical TSYS terms and conditions impose a swipe rate of 2.50% plus $0.20 and a keyed-in rate of 3.50% plus $0.20 per transaction.  However, resellers reserve the right to alter terms and conditions, including rates. Merchants considering Mainstream Merchant Services should familiarize themselves with TSYS rates as a basis of comparison.

Merchants who cancel service before the expiration of the initial three-year term or who submit their notice within the last month of the initial contract will be subject to an early termination fee of $250.

The contract also includes a monthly minimum fee of $20, a chargeback fee of $20, a monthly PCI compliance fee of $6.95, a regulatory fee of $3.95 per month, other associated fees depending on the service provided, and an Interchange-plus pricing structure.

Virtual Terminal and Payment Gateway Pricing

In addition to its storefront payment processing services, Mainstream Merchant Services also dedicates a portion of its website that advertises its virtual terminal and payment gateway services. Mainstream Merchant Services utilizes the TSYS Web PASS virtual terminal. However, pricing on that platform is not disclosed. However, the company’s standard contract refers to a $10 payment gateway fee. Additional rates and fees, including technical support fees, batch fees, and additional transaction rates may apply to these e-commerce services.

Contract Clarification

A company representative contacted us recently and offered two points of clarification regarding these fees. First, the virtual terminal fee is only charged to merchants who actually use the virtual terminal service. Second, the company allows merchants to cancel their contracts within the first 90 days of service with no strings attached. Although this gives merchants a chance to test the company’s hardware, systems, and support without making a long-term commitment, it still doesn’t allow them to escape the contract if the situation deteriorates after the third month.

Industry-Average Terms

Overall, the company’s fees are close to industry averages but not quite competitive with the cheapest merchant account providers. However, we have assigned an average grade of “B” in this category because of the company’s three-year contract. It is our belief that long-term, automatically renewing agreements are not beneficial to merchants, and we cannot recommend the company’s contract terms due to the inclusion of this clause. There are also a couple of public complaints regarding Mainstream’s $250 cancellation fee, but it appears that most of the company’s customers are satisfied with the rates and fees they receive.

    I understand you are trying to remove your original review since we did provide the refund to you. Sometimes systems initiate company policy ETF’s and we, as the sales reps of Mainstream, have to escalate the refund to occur. So it just took a couple of weeks to execute. Sorry for the delay.
    Every merchant and business is important to us. We give very low rates and unfortunately if a business ends up not making profit as expected, or sales volumes plummet, our policy is to get permission from the merchant to increase our fee a bit so we can at least break even instead of lose money on the processing services. We would never just discontinue services.

    This is a terrible company and I would never recommend them. When the Corona virus hit, they arbitrarily decided to hold payments to our small business. We called and called and could never reach anyone helpful; and when we finally reached a manager, he was so rude and abrasive. Then, when we told him we would have to report the company for fraud if they continued to hold our money, he closed our account and told us that all of our company’s income would be HELD FOR SIX MONTHS! We are now reporting this company to the Banking Commission, the Federal Trade Commission, the Attorney General and others.

I recently had to cancel our account due to low profits in our company, the sales person explained that even though times are tough for our business they would not wave the 250$ fee or prorate it because they didn’t make enough money while we we’re using their service. Their fees continued to increase but they didn’t make money, go figure.

        So I read what you posted Brian about ways to cancel with no ETF. Here’s what I find ironic. Merchants enter into these contracts and it’s obviously their responsibility to read what it is they’re signing. If a merchant decides to leave before the initial term is up there’s generally going to be a cancellation fee. However when I read the link you posted about ways to avoid it one of the things says “One tactic for ensuring that the bank does not hold you liable for withdrawals after the account is closed is to inform them that you think the account number has been compromised and that you fear unauthorized withdrawals.” The irony is this is basically telling the merchants to lie because they don’t think their account number has been compromised they just don’t want the fee taken out so how is that not shady?

          Hi Jeff, the issue that I’m writing about in that particular paragraph is regarding a provider’s ability to draft money from your account without prior notice. In many cases, sales representatives fail to inform new customers about early termination penalties and their ability to automatically draft them at the moment of termination. Although I do agree that it is the responsibility of everyone to read the fine print, many new business owners do not even suspect that there could be costly things like termination fees. In the event that the fees are in dispute, I mention one way to keep shady providers out of your checking account is to place a fraud alert on the account. Please keep in mind that cancellation fees can run into the thousands of dollars with some of the shadiest providers out there. In most cases, the fees are never mentioned outside of the fine print, lied about, and have no financial justification. Furthermore, the worst actors will continue to draft additional junk fees without your consent until you close your checking account. Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire and end the end you may find it necessary to protect yourself from losing money by enlisting the fraud prevention systems provided by your bank.

    Trudy King, has been taking care of all 6 of our locations.
    We get next day funding at a good rate better than In have seen. But the biggest thing is that if there is a problem or a question she is just a phone call away. I always have an answer within 24 hours. That’s customer service.

  16. Tribeca has been a client of Mainstream for several years. I have always had a great experience from everyone I’ve dealt with. From the initial purchase and set up to tech support, everyone is really helpful. Tech support is always available, but we really never need it. We just switched machines to the new Poynt system, and it was a painless transition, and the machine is so fast we can accept chip cards twice as fast as before. I can’t be happier with Mainstream!

The initial set up was a little bumpy, working out all the kinks. I was please that he personally went to each of our locations to do the initial set up himself. Even when we switched to new cc machines shortly after joining Mainstream, he himself, again went to each of our locations. Excellent customer service by Chad Rapper.
