What Merchants Are Saying About ProMerchant

We take our role in providing guidance and education regarding the card payment industry very seriously. At our own expense, we have vigorously defended our right to continue expose unethical and predatory practices in the industry, successfully defeating every attempt to silence us. However, fending off frivolous lawsuits is costly. To sustain these efforts, one of the ways we generate revenue is through affiliate partnerships with ethical providers. This means that some of our outgoing links connect business owners to trustworthy, low-cost payment processors, which is what most of our readers seek. We see this revenue channel as a win-win-win for everyone involved. Business owners find good processors, processors get good clients, and we are able to continue to provide a valuable service to the small business community. We also recommend and link to many services that do not compensate us. Our priority is to guide you to the best solutions for your needs, regardless of potential revenue. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us.

All mentions of rate and fee costs are estimations based on publicly available information and client feedback. Actual costs may vary based on a variety of factors unique to your business.

About ProMerchant

ProMerchant Homepage

ProMerchant is a Boston-based merchant account provider that offers credit card processing for most standard-risk business types. The company is owned and operated by former managers of Flagship Merchant Services, but a company representative has stated that ProMerchant does not have any current relationships or plans to start a relationship with Flagship, iPayment, or Paysafe. One ProMerchant executive also founded a payment processor called Ascension Payments, but that brand appears to have been shuttered in favor of ProMerchant.

In August 2021, food ordering company Waitr acquired ProMerchant along with Flow Payments and Cape Cod Merchant Services.

Customer Reviews & Sentiment

Stellar Complaint Record

Our research into ProMerchant reviews reveals a scarcity of negative feedback, with no current indications that the company operates as a scam or ripoff. Similarly, we found an absence of negative reviews for Ascension Payments. This lack of public complaints reinforces ProMerchant’s strong standing in this sector. It’s noteworthy, however, that a single review on our site mentions an issue with undelivered hardware. We encourage you to share your personal experiences with ProMerchant in the comment section below, contributing to a broader understanding of their service quality.

ProMerchant Legal Status

In our investigation, we have not uncovered any outstanding class-action lawsuits or FTC complaints against ProMerchant. For merchants with unresolved grievances, a non-litigious resolution is recommended, such as reporting the issue to appropriate regulatory agencies.

PaymentPop Rating for ProMerchant

Negative Feedback

Just signed up with ProMerchant and immediately requested they cancel my account. I asked a simple and basic question which caused them to put a hold on my account. I have had no problems with transactions for the past 10+ years and I did not ask for anything out of the ordinary. This made no sense to me that a customer can’t ask a basic question. I actually didn’t ask them to DO ANYTHING. I just wanted an understanding. Instead of answering the question they shut me down. We will see if their no contract no penalty policy works.

Positive Feedback

There are no positive reviews published about ProMerchant on the PaymentPop website.

ProMerchant BBB Rating

ProMerchant currently has an “A+” rating with the Better Business Bureau and was formerly BBB-accredited since November 2018 but is no longer accredited. The company has received 0 complaints in the last 3 years. ProMerchant has a 1 out of 5 star rating based on 3 user reviews on the Better Business Bureau website.

What Merchants Say

There are no informal reviews on the ProMerchant profile from the last 3 years. Previously, 6 informal reviews on ProMerchant BBB conveyed why no complaints have been filed against the company. All 6 of the reviews were positive in tone, giving a rating of 5 out of 5 in each case. The most recent review touched upon ProMerchant’s pricing and customer service:

I am very satisfied with the pricing and customer service at ProMerchant and will recommend them to others!

Excellent customer service is a benchmark of a top merchant account provider. Merchants should review their options for high-quality customer service.

An “A” Performance

Due to the company’s clean record, we agree with the BBB’s rating at this time. However, there are good reasons for merchants to regard all BBB ratings with some skepticism.

Trustpilot Rating for ProMerchant

ProMerchant has a 4.3 out of 5 star rating based on 232 user reviews on Trustpilot.

Positive Feedback

I love ProMerchant, their fees are the best and have an easy experience with the payment processing. For the past month I haven’t been able to get ahold of them. Their main telephone goes straight to voicemail and I can’t get ahold of my agent or any agent for that matter. I believe they’re going out of business. I will update my rating once I hear back.

Negative Feedback

I got signed up with Promerchant but now I can’t get anyone to answer my calls and charges has been taken out of my account. I have been trying for days to contact someone by phone and email. No answer!

Processing Rates & Fees

Month-to-Month Contract

ProMerchant offers a flexible month-to-month contract to its clients, providing a choice between interchange-plus pricing and membership-style pricing. For its interchange-plus pricing model, the company typically applies a rate of interchange plus 0.50% and $0.15 for each transaction. The membership-style pricing involves a fixed monthly fee, with transactions processed at the interchange rate without additional markup. Details regarding monthly minimum fees or PCI compliance fees are not explicitly mentioned by ProMerchant, which emphasizes its commitment to not imposing early termination fees, favoring month-to-month agreements instead.

Regarding equipment, ProMerchant clarifies that it does not engage in leasing processing equipment or selling it for profit, aligning with its straightforward pricing approach.

Virtual Terminal and Payment Gateway Pricing

ProMerchant also promotes its virtual terminal and payment gateway solutions, notably through a partnership with Authorize.Net. While standard terms through Authorize.Net may include a transaction fee of 2.90% plus $0.30, along with a monthly gateway fee of $25 and a batch fee of $0.10, ProMerchant may adjust these terms as a reseller to fit the specific needs of its clients.

No Merchant Complaints

Despite ProMerchant’s interchange-plus rates being relatively higher than some competitors, the absence of public complaints regarding its pricing indicates a level of satisfaction among its users. Merchants are encouraged to compare ProMerchant’s offerings with other available options to ensure they are receiving the best possible rates and terms. For those interested in exploring further, our selection of the best merchant accounts may provide additional competitive options. If you have experiences with ProMerchant’s contracts, sharing your insights in the comments could benefit other merchants.

Employee Reviews & Sales Practices

No Evidence of Independent Agents

ProMerchant appears to market its services with a combination of an in-house sales team and online affiliate marketing. A company representative has confirmed that all of its agents operate out of a single office with direct supervision from managers. Moreover, we cannot find any ProMerchant reviews that would be indicative of a large independent sales operation. This compares favorably to our list ofbest credit card processors. If you suspect that you are being charged hidden ProMerchant fees, we recommend obtaining a third-party statement audit to find and eliminate excessive charges.

Previous ProMerchant Rate Quotes

At the time of our previous update, ProMerchant maintained a partnership with CreditCardProcessing.net, an affiliate marketing website that offers favorable placement based on ad purchases by processors. This strategy is also used by Flagship Merchant Services. ProMerchant’s profile on CreditCardProcessing.net advertised a rate of interchange plus 0.50% plus $0.15 per transaction. Interchange-plus is the most transparent pricing model available, and there was no evidence that ProMerchant listed this quote deceptively. A company representative has since stated that ProMerchant no longer advertises on CreditCardProcessing.net.

ProMerchant Competitors

Compare ProMerchant to competitors that earned top marks.

Bottom Line

ProMerchant earns its reputation as a reliable merchant services provider largely by default, primarily due to the limited amount of merchant feedback currently available. The company’s advertised pricing appears promising and could offer competitive rates, yet its Flagship affiliation warrants caution. Given this association, we believe it prudent to wait for more comprehensive merchant reports before making a definitive assessment. We will closely monitor emerging merchant feedback to refine our evaluation of ProMerchant’s services.

In the meantime, merchants would likely benefit from opting for a top-rated merchant account provider, where the volume of customer feedback provides a clearer picture of the provider’s strengths and challenges. By making such a comparison, business owners can confidently select a provider that aligns with their specific requirements and expectations, reducing the likelihood of encountering unforeseen complications.
