Company Overview

1st American Card Service is a merchant account provider that was established in 1986. The company is a reseller of Paysafe (formerly iPayment) and appears to also operate under the name of AcceptCards.org. However, the company advertises interchange-plus rates that vary from the standard pricing of Paysafe. 1st American Card Service is a registered and authorized ISO for Visa and MSP for MasterCard and is sponsored by Westamerica Bancorporation as its Acquiring Bank.

As of 2020 1st American Card Service's Better Business Bureau profile no longer lists a website, and the original URL 1stAmericanCardService.com now forwards to acceptcards.org. This seems to indicate a scaling down of the brand overall or a renaming to the Accept Cards name. The Accept Cards website does link back to the original 1st American Card Services BBB profile.

UPDATE:1st American Card Service appears to have gone out of business altogether or is no longer operating a web presence. If you have any information regarding the company’s operational status, please leave it in the comment section below.

1st American Card Service Customer Reviews

Here's What Their Clients Say

Customer Reviews Summary
Total Online Complaints 10+
Live Customer Support Yes
Most Common Complaint Customer Service

Questionable Complaint Credibility

While no rebuttals to these issues have been put forward by a representative, many customer comments hint at the possibility that some of these complaints were written by competitors (or just a single merchant) because identical posts with varying names were found. Therefore, the credibility of some of the complaints may be questionable. Regardless of their validity, given the number of complaints within the past three years surrounding customer service, we are compelled to award 1st American Card Service a “B” in this category.

Customer Service Issues

Approximately 10 negative 1st American Card Service reviews were found on this and other non-BBB consumer protection websites, most of which cited equipment problems, hidden fees, suspended transactions, or a lack of quality customer service.

1st American Card Service Lawsuits

We have not found any outstanding class-action lawsuits or FTC complaints filed against 1st American Card Service. Dissatisfied merchants who wish to pursue a non-litigious course of action against the company should consider reporting it to the relevant supervisory organizations.

1st American Card Service Customer Service Options

1st American Card Service’s website provides email support and an automated service ticket form for lower and higher priority problems. The lack of 24-hour telephone support as an option results in slow customer service response times, making 1st American Card Service’s support options insufficient to qualify it as a top-rated merchant account provider for customer service.

What Merchants Say

1st American Card Services has also received 1 informal review. The review was negative and detailed difficulties with customer service:

If I could give less than 1 star I would. They can’t even return a call to make me a customer. Can’t image how bad it would be if I actually acquired their products or services. My advice? Just keep on talking to other card service companies.

Merchants who have had difficulty resolving issues with their accounts can benefit from asking reviewing their options for providers with a reputation for excellent customer service.

An “A” Overall

Given the company’s low complaint total, we agree with the BBB’s rating at this time but urge merchants to be skeptical of the BBB’s reviews.

Competitive Rates with Interchange-Plus

1st American Card Service’s emphasis on the Interchange-plus rate structure ensures that most merchants will receive the most competitive rate structure available.  The company charges interchange plus 0.20% plus $0.11. This merchant services company also claims to have no contract term length in its standard contract, which could make it competitive with even the cheapest merchant account providers.

Virtual Terminal and Payment Gateway Pricing

In addition to its storefront payment processing services, 1st American Card Service also dedicates a portion of its website to advertising its proprietary virtual terminal and payment gateway services, called Virtual Weblink. The service is designed to allow merchants to embed a hyperlink onto their websites which will allow users to complete transactions through a system run by 1st American Card Service. The portion of the company’s website dedicated to this service advertises their rate of interchange plus 0.20% plus $0.11. It is unclear if additional rates and fees, such as gateway fees, technical support fees, or batch fees, apply to this e-commerce service.

No Undisclosed Fees

According to the company, merchant agreements run on a month-to-month basis without any early termination fee. 1st American Card Services also advertises that it does not charge application fees, a monthly minimum fee, an annual fee, or other hidden fees. The company does advertise First Data (now Fiserv) under the equipment section of its website. This may mean that merchants leasing equipment through 1st American Card Service may be subject to 48-month, non-cancelable lease agreements through First Data Global Leasing. Though the company itself does not impose long-term contracts onto merchants, lease agreements for equipment are separate contracts, independent of the merchant account provider.

Our Final Thoughts

Potential for Savings

1st American Card Service does not appear to be a ripoff and rates as an above-average merchant services provider according to our rating criteria. The company actively promotes Interchange-plus pricing and appears to have few legitimate complaints filed online. The company’s score is likely to change as its BBB profile accumulates more feedback, but for now, it is competitive with some top-rated merchant accounts.

How Did 1st American Card Service Treat You?

I have been with this company for eight years now. Suddenly Customer Service just stopped.
No return phone calls. Tried for ever. No curtesy back call.. Stay away from them.
Also the rates now suck. You can get better elsewhere.

Not sure how this company was given a 5-star review. I gave them a couple months of my processors statements and the comparison they sent back was ridiculous. They literally fabricated numbers to say they were going to save me $26,000 a year which was absurd. When I called and asked them to explain how they arrived at these savings and where they got the numbers (we were paying 0.45% over interchange for all card types) they said they’d look into it and never responded. Now a get a weekly junk email asking me to complete my sign-up process with them and they have had to mark them as spam.

We love 1st American Card Service. Have been with them for 8 years. We now have 7 businesses with them going on 8 as of today.

I have been trough many accounts before them and get solicitations daily, nothing has come close. They are prompt and always do what they say.

  • BRIAN HART

I still use 1st American, although I’m not happy with them and i will be switching. Like others have stated they never get back to you when they say they will if at all.. I requested a credit card reader for my phone, they sent me four- which they charged me and they shouldn’t have, plus they opened up another account which should not have happened as well and of course they charged me for that. On top of that the credit card reader did not work properly! I have complained to Laura, and Brian- the owner of the company about the issues and tried to get my money back with NO response.

  • Michael Kern

While we were with First American Card Services we received good service. The problem came when we decided to switch processing companies. We contacted them 7 times over 2 months requesting our account be closed. At one point the rep documented my complaint to send to a supervisor. On my 6th call the rep asked why I was calling – my account was closed. We just received a statement billing us for yet another month. Call 7 was today. I was finally sent an account closure form. I have zero faith they will follow through and close my account…

This is the worst establishment I have ever dealt with! They never return phone calls the operators are rude and they keep giving you the running around. Example hi could I speak to such and such person their not available they can call you back in thirty minutes and never do!!! They were suppose to set up my funds so they can go to my bank account and I’m steal waiting meanwhile my funds are going to the previous owner. Absolutely ATROCIOUS COMPANY.Save the headache and go with someone else….

  • Trish

I made the mistake of requesting information and they have hounded me and hounded me. Numerous attempts requesting them to remove me from their email list have failed. Be very wary of this type of a company who cannot respect a simple request to not be contacted.
