Before You Switch to Payroc: What You Need to Know

We take our role in providing guidance and education regarding the card payment industry very seriously. At our own expense, we have vigorously defended our right to continue expose unethical and predatory practices in the industry, successfully defeating every attempt to silence us. However, fending off frivolous lawsuits is costly. To sustain these efforts, one of the ways we generate revenue is through affiliate partnerships with ethical providers. This means that some of our outgoing links connect business owners to trustworthy, low-cost payment processors, which is what most of our readers seek. We see this revenue channel as a win-win-win for everyone involved. Business owners find good processors, processors get good clients, and we are able to continue to provide a valuable service to the small business community. We also recommend and link to many services that do not compensate us. Our priority is to guide you to the best solutions for your needs, regardless of potential revenue. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us.

About Payroc

Payroc Homepage

Founded in 2003, Payroc is a merchant account provider that offers payment processing solutions for merchants of all sizes and types. The company resells the products and services of First Data (now Fiserv) , Vantiv, TSYS, and Chase Merchant Services (formerly Chase Paymentech). Payroc formerly operated under the name of “Retriever Payments Chicago” and was one of two Chicago-area offices of Retriever Payment Systems. The other Retriever office near Chicago, Retriever Merchant Solutions, currently has a moderate number of complaints and a “C” rating on CPO.

Expansion Through Acquisitions

In September 2016, Payroc acquired iTransact, and the company now maintains a second office at iTransact’s Utah location. With the acquisition of credit card processor Integrity Payment Systems in 2018, Payroc further expanded its payment solution offerings. In 2020 Payroc again acquired another payment provider Bluestone Payments.

Products & Merchant Services

Payment Processing

Payroc processes major debit and credit cards for various business types. Their services include EMV card readers and swipers, POS solutions, e-commerce options such as virtual terminals and the Payroc Integrated Payment Platform gateway, API integration, the ConsumerChoice processing program, CashRewards cash discounting, risk monitoring and management, and same-day funding.

Customer Reviews & Sentiment

Low Complaint Total

Our search revealed only three negative Payroc reviews. One of these reviews accuses the company of being a scam or a ripoff, citing unexpected fees. The other two express concerns about being misled by sales agents into agreeing to long-term equipment leases. These issues were addressed publicly and professionally by a Payroc representative, though the original complaints were removed from Payroc’s Facebook page. Regardless of their visibility, these complaints are considered in our assessment.

No Retriever of Chicago Complaints

Complaints against Payroc’s former brand, Retriever of Chicago, would be relevant here, but none directly referencing Payroc’s operations were found. It’s important to note that there are several complaints against another Retriever office near Chicago, which appears to be separate from Payroc. This distinction is crucial for merchants conducting independent research to avoid confusion.

Payroc Lawsuits

No major class-action lawsuits or FTC complaints against Payroc have been identified. Merchants seeking non-litigious resolutions are advised to consider reporting to relevant supervisory bodies.

PaymentPop Rating for Payroc

Negative Feedback

biggest rip off company out there. Salesman was very high pressured. When I told him I needed to think about it for a day or two he convinced me to sign up by telling me there was no long-term contract and did not say one word about an early cancellation fee and I am not paying $599 for an early cancellation fee when I was not told by the salesman

Positive Feedback

We have had a great experience using Payroc card processing service. It very easy to use and the money goes directly into our account the very next day

Payroc BBB Rating

Payroc currently has an “A+” rating with the Better Business Bureau and has been BBB-accredited since February 2016. The company has received 9 complaints in the last 36 months. 6 of the complaints are issues with billing or collections,  2 are due to a problem with a product or service, and 1 had to do with advertising or sales. Of the 9 complaints, Payroc has successfully resolved 7 to the satisfaction of the merchant.

Payroc has also received 21 informal reviews on its BBB profile, with only 2 being negative in tone. It should be noted that most of these reviews are not subject to verification by the BBB. In fact, there is reason to be skeptical of the BBB’s rating system.

Payroc has a 2.82 out of 5 star rating based on 17 user reviews on the Better Business Bureau website.

What Merchants Say

In addition to the 6 complaints filed against Payroc, the company has also received 21 informal reviews on its BBB profile. For some reason, these are not accessible on the BBB website, but the company has a 3.19 out of 5 rating.

An “A” Performance

In light of the company’s high complaint resolution ratio and positive reviews, we agree with the BBB’s rating at this time.

Trustpilot Rating for Payroc

Payroc has a 2.9 out of 5 star rating based on 2 user reviews on Trustpilot.

Positive Feedback

There are no positive reviews published about Payroc on the Trustpilot website.

Negative Feedback

Payroc customer service is in another country and they are not helpful. Bad attitude for customer service department. Agents that sign you up will not answer the phone or help after you are signed up. I was charged some Federal Payroc fees and the company would not help and blamed me for not filling out paperwork or doing something required that I was never informed about. Slow to receive money in your account. I should have checked other sites for reviews. Afterwards found out this is not a highly rated company.

Google Maps Rating for Payroc

Payroc has a 4.3 out of 5 star rating based on 223 user reviews on Google Maps.

Positive Feedback

I have used Payroc since I opened my business and I could not be more pleased as a small business owner. Customer support, dependable deposits, and ease of use are all outstanding! Thank you Payroc for making this part of my life one of the easiest, worry-free jobs I do not feel like I have to do. It has been a great partnership.

Negative Feedback

If I could give 0 stars, I would. Payroc has dropped the ball at every turn. Credit card processing is a commodity and the difference is how well they can provide service. Payroc showed a lack of attention to detail and understand our issues. Would not recommend at all.

Processing Rates & Fees

Payroc Pricing

Details on the standard Payroc contract are not widely available publicly. The company maintains confidentiality regarding its pricing and contract terms, and there’s a lack of specific merchant feedback addressing rates or fees directly. Payroc advertises interchange-plus pricing, noted for its transparency, on its website. Given Payroc’s partnerships with major processors like First Data (Fiserv), Vantiv, TSYS, and Chase Merchant Services, the range of fees Payroc charges may reflect those associated with the services of these processors.

Furthermore, some complaints on social media and our review’s comment section have highlighted issues with long-term, non-cancellable equipment leases and a mentioned $375 early termination fee. These points indicate that while Payroc’s pricing may be transparently presented, it might not always represent the most competitive option compared to other budget-friendly merchant accounts.

Ask About All Contract Terms

In the absence of detailed information, we advise merchants to thoroughly inquire about all potential contract terms and fees with Payroc before proceeding with their services. Merchants with insights into Payroc’s contract specifics, including any monthly minimum or PCI compliance fees, are encouraged to share their experiences below. Additionally, for those seeking competitive payment processing solutions, we recommend exploring our curated list of top merchant account providers.

Employee Reviews & Sales Practices

Payroc Sales Approach

Payroc appears to rely on traditional advertising, referral partnerships, and outside sales representatives to market its products. There is no evidence at this time that the company employs a large team of independently contracted sales representatives, although at the time of our last review, two complaints filed against its Facebook profile seemed to suggest that the merchants were initially contacted by independent reps. These were the only Payroc complaints we had found about the company’s sales approach, so we will assume they were isolated incidents. It’s worth noting that we cannot find any complaints filed against Payroc during its time as Retriever of Chicago, which would distinguish it from the other, poorly reviewed Retriever branches. This compares favorably to our list ofbest credit card processors.

No Misleading Advertising

Payroc does not feature any misleading rate quotes or unrealistic guarantees on its website. Generally speaking, there is little cause for concern with its sales tactics. However, if you suspect that Payroc is charging you undisclosed fees, we recommend seeking a third-party statement audit to find and eliminate hidden charges.

Payroc Competitors

Compare Payroc to competitors that earned top marks.

Bottom Line

Payroc rates as a reliable merchant services provider according to our rating criteria, standing out in an industry where trust and transparency are paramount. The company’s previous affiliation with the Retriever family of companies might initially give some merchants pause, especially given the mixed reputation associated with Retriever. However, Payroc has distinguished itself as one of the few Retriever offices that did not engage in the questionable practices that often lead to negative reviews. This distinction suggests a commitment to ethical business conduct and customer satisfaction, which is further underscored by the positive feedback Payroc continues to receive from its clients.

Moreover, Payroc’s recent acquisition of Integrity Payment Systems, another highly rated provider, appears to be a strategic move that will enhance rather than hinder its service quality. Integrity Payment Systems’ reputation for reliability and excellent customer service aligns well with Payroc’s standards, promising a seamless integration that benefits merchants. Despite these positive indicators, we always advise merchants to carefully examine the terms of any contract they are offered. This includes scrutinizing the fine print and comparing Payroc’s pricing and terms to those of top overall providers in the industry. By doing so, merchants can ensure they are making well-informed decisions that best serve their business needs.
