Company Overview

Created in October 2018 as a rebranding of Pivotal Payments, Nuvei is a large merchant account provider that claims to serve more than 50,000 merchants and process more than $15 billion in credit card transactions annually.

Article Summary

Before we dive in, here’s a short summary of what we’ll cover:

  • Nuvei’s various payment processing services.
  • Nuvei has received numerous complaints, which have increased in recent years.
  • Nuvei’s contract appears to contain a number of undesirable features, including heavy fees.

Nuvei Acquisitions & Partnerships

In late 2021, Nuvei acquired Mazooma, a bank-to-bank transfer service, and Simplex, a crypto payment firm. They also integrated with Flow in order to provide NFT purchasing and stablecoin processing and partnered with FTX, the notorious cryptocurrency exchange and hedge fund by Sam Bankman-Fried that went bankrupt and has been accused of defrauding its million-plus users. These moves were made prior to an IPO by the company, marking them for a major expansion in reach in the market.

In 2023, Nuvei completed the acquisition of Paya Holdings Inc., an Atlanta-based payment processing company, for $1.3 billion. The acquisition aimed to expand Nuvei’s portfolio and reach in the payment technology sector. However, there has been a lawsuit over the purchase, as described below. The company also partnered with Esenda in 2023 to create a payment platform for tuition.

Over 300 Nuvei Complaints

Nuvei’s recent rebranding appears to be more of a symbolic marketing shift than a radical reorganization of the company. We therefore consider the company’s client feedback under the name Pivotal Payments to be applicable to this review. There are a moderate-to-high number of negative Nuvei reviews filed online, including over 170 in the comment section of our Pivotal Payments review. The content of the Nuvei reviews is fairly consistent, with numerous clients reporting poor customer service, problems with accounts, processing errors, terminal problems, difficulty canceling service, unexpected costs, and high cancellation fees. If you have your own Nuvei review to make, please do so in the comments below.

Nuvei on Ripoff Report

It should also be noted that Pivotal Payments appears to have paid Ripoff Report to join that site’s Corporate Advocacy program, which allows Pivotal to replace the titles of negative reviews with bogus promotional blurbs that are all identical. Business owners should note that the full complaints can still be found beneath the lengthy promotional material that has been added to each review. It is our view that this approach demonstrates less of a commitment to customer service than if the company had simply provided professional rebuttals to merchant complaints. It is unclear at this time whether Nuvei intends to pursue this same strategy under its new name.

Nuvei Lawsuits and Fines

In October 2018, a judge granted final approval to a $9 million class-action settlement from Pivotal Payments related to an alleged violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. According to the plaintiffs, “Pivotal violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (“TCPA”) when Gordon Rose and/or EPLJ made telemarketing calls to cell phones through the use of an automatic telephone dialing system or an artificial or prerecorded voice,” even though Pivotal “did not have the recipients’ permission to make these calls.” The period during which affected businesses could file a claim has expired, although the settlement will not be paid out until every attempt at appeal has been exhausted.

In 2019, a lawsuit was initiated against Nuvei by Breeders’ Cup (a non-profit equestrianism organization) alleging that Nuvei (then operating as Pivotal Payments) had breached their Sponsorship Agreement. Pivotal Payments terminated the Sponsorship Agreement due to its inability to process patron tickets at a Breeders’ Cup event held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Breeders’ Cup informed Pivotal Payments the venue had an exclusive contract with a different payments processor, so Pivotal Payments should not expect to enter into a merchant agreement with Churchill Downs. This led to Pivotal Payments then terminating the agreement with Breeders’ Cup, which the latter company alleges was a breach of contract, unjust enrichment, and breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing. A resolution is yet to be made.

In late 2021, a number of law offices announced that investors in Nuvei should look into class-action suits against the company due to their alleged misleading of investors.

A class action lawsuit was filed against Nuvei, claiming civil and statutory damages pursuant to the Securities Act and the Civil Code of Quebec. This lawsuit involves persons and entities who acquired Nuvei’s securities between September 17, 2020, to December 7, 2021.

Nuvei Corp is facing a lawsuit for allegedly refusing to pay shareholders of Paya Holdings Inc. after acquiring the Atlanta-based payment processing company. The lawsuit claims that Nuvei agreed to pay $9.75 per share for Paya shares but did not follow through after the merger was completed on February 22. The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, seeks compensatory and consequential damages from Nuvei for alleged violations of the merger agreement and Delaware law.

Suddenly Clean Complaint Record

The Better Business Bureau awards Nuvei an “A+” rating and has accredited them since 2021. The company’s profile is currently showing 24 complaints in the last 36 months.

What Merchants Say

Nuvei has also received 17 informal reviews to its new BBB profile. The most recent review is negative and describes issues with missing money and poor customer service:

I cant even begin to tell you what a crock of s***! this company is! they gave my incorrect banking information to AMEX who havent payed me for 6 months! AND NO ONE WILL HELP ME CORRECT THIS! I cant do it myself because I need to give them the old banking information before thy will update to the new! and i dont have that info – some person with IQ of the average 4 year old at NUVEI has that info and is apparently not willing to part with it! And being charged $x a month for being non PCI compliant is total BS! Plus another $x for an incomplete scan! Their customer service is totally s***! AND someone needs to tell them that their “on hold” music actually induces suicidal feelings! Hours of my life I’ll never get back! They actually should be hung drawn and quartered – and I think I’m being quite fair in my review! STAY AWAY!!!

Great customer service is a hallmark of a top-ranked merchant account. Readers should review their options for companies that offer superior customer service to avoid issues like this review chronicles.

A “C” Performance Overall

Considering Nuvei’s former complaint total and resolution ratio, we have adjusted the BBB’s rating to a “C.”

Nuvei Fees, Rates & Costs

A Closer Look at The Contract

>
Cost & Fees Summary
Item Result
Cancellation Penalties Yes
Monthly & Annual Fees Yes
Processing Rates 1.00% - 4.99%
Equipment Leasing Yes

Variable Contract Terms

Nuvei’s pricing may vary greatly based upon several factors, including the agent, franchise, sub-ISO, or partner setting up the account, and by a business’ processing volume and business type. Additionally, the company’s sales agents are known to lease equipment either directly or through First Data Global Leasing at varying costs. It should be noted that most credit card terminals can be purchased for under $500. Non-cancellable, long-term leases mean a business owner can pay thousands for that same equipment making them a contract term to avoid.

A company representative has stated that Nuvei has started to focus on offering free equipment and equipment rental programs to reduce the number of lease contracts it sells, but it is still possible for businesses to receive a long-term lease from a Nuvei rep.

Virtual Terminal and Payment Gateway Pricing

In addition to its storefront payment processing services, Nuvei also dedicates a portion of its website to advertising its virtual terminal and payment gateway services. The company provides standard e-commerce payment processing services as well as accepting ACH, Apple Pay, and Google Pay online. However, pricing is not disclosed on either of those services. Additional rates and fees, including gateway fees, technical support fees, batch fees, and additional transaction rates typically apply to these e-commerce services.

Nuvei Early Termination Fee

Nuvei previously enforced a liquidated damages early termination fee in its standard contract. As of this update, however, a company representative has informed us that the company’s standard early termination fee is now a flat $395 fee for businesses processing up to $25,000 per month and $495 for merchants processing over $25,000 per month.

Nuvei Standard Contract

Nuvei’s standard contract appears to include a three-year service agreement with an automatic renewal for one year, but a few clients have reported agreements up to five years. A PCI compliance fee of $139.80 has also been reported on behalf of businesses under contract with the company. Other fees include a chargeback fee of up to $35 per incident and a monthly fee of $25.

A company representative has stated that Nuvei does offer month-to-month contracts, but that these are up to agent discretion. As noted above, several reviews state that Nuvei agents often also market 48-month, non-cancellable equipment leases that can cost thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars over the life of the lease. These default terms are not remotely competitive with the cheapest merchant accounts available.

It is strongly advised that business owners fully understand the pricing and terms of their Nuvei merchant account agreement before signing. We also encourage businesses to check out our list of the providers of the best merchant accounts.

Outside Sales Agents

Nuvei does not appear to use any deceptive advertising or rate quoting in its official materials, but the company has suffered considerable damage to its reputation due to its marketing strategy.

The company relies very heavily on outside independent sales agents, sub-ISOs, telemarketing, franchises, and strategic partnerships to sell its services. It is likely that Nuvei pays varying commissions based on the rates and fees that agents set during the activation of the merchant account and equipment lease. Many clients report that agents misrepresent their pricing, terms and conditions, and lease agreements to persuade the business to accept an account. Nuvei’s internal policies appear to be doing a poor job of regulating its resellers’ marketing practices, as evidenced by its recent class-action settlement. This does not compare favorably to our list of best credit card processors.

Efforts to Improve

A representative of Nuvei stated in an email to us that the company has implemented a “sales compliance” position so that all sales channels meet the company’s “internal standards,” but did not elaborate on the policies that define the standards. He also stated that Nuvei will buy back an equipment lease if the company cannot provide service to the client, or if there was a sales misrepresentation issue. As of this update, we have seen some evidence to indicate that Nuvei’s efforts have resulted in reduced client complaints regarding sales and marketing tactics, which has improved its rating in this section to a “C.” If you suspect that the company is overcharging you, we recommend seeking a third-party statement audit to eliminate hidden fees.

Our Nuvei Review Summary

Our Final Thoughts

Nuvei rates as an average credit card processing provider according to our rating system. The company’s rebranding does not appear to have included any significant structural changes, so businesses can expect the service and pricing that Pivotal Payments was known for. Considering that Pivotal Payments was rated as one of the worst merchant account providers in the industry, Nuvei has its work cut out for it under its new name.

Deal with company has been the biggest mistake I have ever made in all the time I have been in business. I personally have spent over 100 hours getting set up. Making sure everything was complied. And yet when talking to the other company I found out it was not my mistake. But I got over charged and when I stopped payment. It was sent to collections when nuvei owes my company a refund. I know now that at my new office that is opening that nuvei can not handle it.

Nuvei processed our ACH payments and sent us and acknowledgement that this customer paid; however, we never received the funds – 12 separate incidents over 10 months time – $14,685.00. When we called them out on it, they acknowledged the error but it still took 4 weeks to rrecover our money.

After my bank sent an NOC in early 2022, Nuvei still had not updated the information in February of 2023. When I tried to update that information with them,(numberous emails and phone calls) they have drug their feet for over 3 weeks…and still no calls, no correction. They have changed fees from the original contract and are trying to hold us to a contract that they themselves have violated. And they still won’t update the banking information. Bank files indicate that they were notified OVER A YEAR AGO!!!!

Nuvei is CORRUPT and VERY MISLEADING. We signed up for ACH ONLY transactions and were hammered with exorbitant fees related to PCI compliance, plus other fees. PCI compliance is NOT APPLICABLE SINCE WE ONLY PROCESS ACH payments. They made it extremely difficult to cancel and are STILL CHAERGING US FEES A MONTH LATER.

We were 100% mislead in the sales process. All the contracts we signed DO NOT DISCLOSE THE FEES THEY CHARGED. They are AWFUL and DO NOT CARE whatsoever that they are a bait & switch operation.

    AVOID!

  • No more Nuvei

    No more Nuvei

I totally agree with you. This company is absolutely corrupt. They’ve been charging my company wireless fee over 10 years even we had wired. They said they changed from Pivotal to Nuvei, so thry didn’t know. Also, they increased card charge little by little without letting us know. Now, they said I only needed to do PCI compliance once a year. Buy they charged over $40.00 a month for PCI incomplete. I claimed for refund because this is once a year thing. They said they changed to every three month. I did PCI compliance 4 month ago, they started charging again without communicating. Actually, I phoned them and ask about PCI one month ago and they said it’s good till August,2022. I want to know if I can sue them. If any company use Nuvei, please check your statement diligently. They basically steal your company’s money. Very corrupt company

They are absolutely not customer freindly and have played a part in the destruction of my company. We are in a pandemic and instead of working with me they screwed me over. I will be boycotting every company these theives own and I will do everything I can to help with thier destruction just like they did me.

  • The Nuvie company has three partners or departments interga pay, digitech and Nuvie. Integra payments was very unprofessional and dishonest specially the sales people. When you sign up it is one company Nuvei you think you are dealing with then you found out it is three different departments digitech, integrapayments and Nuvie and three calls centers. Their agent promised to cancel my previous provider before they signed me up and I did tell them about my contract on my machines; and they said they will take care of everything and they how to deal with my previous provider to cancel. They sent me a cancellation form as well which I signed and sent back to them. Now. after 7months I found out they did not only cancel, but never made a single effort on that part. One department agent emailed me stating they will cover the cost of penalties and the other department is saying no penalty does not mean the cost of my lease buy out. If they did take care of my account cancellation properly in the first place we never ended up having two merchant account open. Now, they tell me I can go take legal action. They also promised me great service, but the machines, heat up, freeze and does not charge. They have replaced them 3 times now and it is still the same issue. Please do not buy into what they sell like Yassine, Jashua their sales and technical team at Integra Payments is not responsible people.

AKA PIVOTAL PAYMENTS. Outrageous fees most of which are much higher than competitors. Look around and compare. I paid the early termination fee and changed my buisness bank account # just to cut all ties

  • Nuvei is horrible! They lie, my bank hates we use them for that purpose. Their software has multiple issues that will cost you customers and money. They dont even tell you when the machine needs a software update. And the techs that do the updates dont work on weekends leaving you do without! Stay the hell away from this scam company!

    • Exactly!!!

They are horrible. They are taking many companies money. Plz take this company shut down. They are dishonest, bad, bad!!
PCI, hidden fees, cancelation fees, lie!!

  • In Regards to this Company Nevei They are CROOKS ! I have just audited my books . And found over … $2000 in extra fees that they have slipped under my nose. Coaching Fees , PCI non-compliance , Security Fees it goes on. If anyone knows what can be done about this , please advise so this does not keep happening to us small businesses .

    • Dawn Shearer

Would you please fill out a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission? I totally agree with stating they are CROOKS! They just take it upon themselves to charge fees, double PCI compliance fees, and then try to make up their own rules regarding cancellation fees when your contract is up. I just filled out a complaint with FTC and they said if they get enough complaints, they will pursue the complaints. For anyone considering this company for their merchant services, trust us, and stay away.

      • I totally agree with you. I read all the comments. All have same issue. This company should be sued!!!!

  • Could not get terminals to work. Multiple pieces of hardware and software tried none worked. Now they want a termination fee for a contract they couldn’t fulfil.
    Stay far far away.

  • This company will not work with us in anyway with regards to the Pandemic. We are a travel company without revenue for 7 months. We asked them to cancel and return our $50k of funds they are holding against any possible charge backs. But as we had a couple of small charges of a few hundred dollars within the last couple of months, they refuse to give us back the $50k that has been held for over 7 months without charge backs initiated. They tell us the hold the entire $50k from the last transaction no matter how small it was. They should be able to return $45k at the very least and hold onto $5k for recent transaction possible charge backs. This company is the worst merchant processor I have EVER used. Stay away from them.

  • Don’t touch them. Their sales people are high pressure and don’t disclose the early cancellation fees, or their transaction fees, which are higher than our other processor Converge. Flat refused to waive the termination fee.

    Absolute garbage.

    • Dawn Shearer

Please fill out a complaint with the FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION. I did and they stated if enough people complain, they will pursue the complaints. We need to work together to prosecute this company.

      • Sheri Barnes

How did you file a report? I am interested in starting a class action suit. The company created a new fee called an LD fee. When you cancel, they decide how much money in processing they think they will lose and steal that amount our of your bank account. Unreal what is happening. Please reach out to me via email if you can help!

  • Dana Rivard

Nuvei/Pivotal Payments is a poor choice for processing. Although they had provided acceptable service for the last 3 plus years, their fee structure has crept up and new fees appeared as well as double dipping the PCI compliance fees. (monthly and yearly). I was stupid enough to not read the fine print on our 3 year contract, that we are “automatically” renewed for 1 year increments (with no notice and $395 cancellation fee) and must notify 60 days in advance to cancel. I would highly recommend that anyone looking for processing should avoid this company, and should be very wary of the really small fine print concerning cancellations.

    • Dana,

Since it sounds like your automatic renewal kicked in, you might want to review your options for canceling your merchant account without paying an early termination fee.

    • Dawn Shearer

Exact same thing happened to me but I am almost sure the company did not have me sign a contract specifying the 60-day notice. I gave 30 days’ notice to a nice gentleman named Chris but now the company won’t let me talk to him. How can they legally double dip regarding the PCI compliance fees when these fees were not agreed upon signing up. Legally I would feel this should be regulated and needs all of us to file the appropriate complaints per below Brian’s recommendations. I am a business owner for over 30 years and I can not believe companies can get away with this shady type of business.

  • Jodi Vetterl

The worst company I have ever dealt with. It would be too long to go into all the details but in short, it took several months to get set up, extremely painful. I was told that the only fee was on a per-transaction basis of 1.39%-1.62% depending on the card range being used. That’s it, no other fees. I specifically asked about fees, nope, no fees. In short, they have taken over $600 in random fees from my CAD account and I’ve only used it for one day transacting 651 in total. Then my USD account is a different story. I opened it in mid-June after a painful 3-month process of getting to this point. Less than a month later, I went to use it only to be told that the account was made inactive due to non-use so I ended up transacting through paypal instead. I had been told it was closed so I left it. Then I started getting monthly fees from Elavon, all different amounts as well. 69 in August then 22 in Sept and now 39 in Oct. I had called mid-sept to see if this was Nuvei & they said definitely not, never heard of Elavon. I had an overseas trip so I just sent my bank an email requesting this to be investigated. When I returned in early Oct, there was another fee for Elavon and I called the number my bank gave me. Elavon is a 3rd party merchant that transacts for Nuvei, so it was Nuvei taking this money. I called Nuvei and have just got nowhere. So my bank is doing further investigation and it’s time to involve a lawyer and the BBB. And to top it all off, I learned that the sales rep was never paid! Incredibly painful company to work with AND extremely unethical! Do yourself a favour and pay the higher amount with square, stripe or whomever. It’s not worth the hassle of using this company whatsoever!

  • Tom Yocom Auto Tech Auto Repair

I cancelled Nuvie because there charges were getting very high. I had been with them for over three years so there should have been no cancellation fee. There was no fee charged they just stole money from my bank account every month since I cancelled. So far they have stolen about seven hundred dollars. If anyone is interested in a class action lawsuit e mail me. What ever you do don’t sign up with them they are thieves. They need to get their but kicked

Do not use this company to process payments for your company. They will steal your money and leave you with nothing.

I joined in Feb 2019. I completed my first transaction everything was smooth sailing. Next morning rather than getting am email saying i recieved my funds i recieved an email saying funds were sent back to Nuvei. Second email was from Nuvei saying account was closed and i no longer was able to use them. Very quicky i looked over everything and realized the deposit was sent back to Nuvei from my bank because i accidently mixed up the last few digits of my spouces account rather than mine.
I called to explain and risk mgt. Was rude and said didnt care and to next time go over everything. My payment i had collected from a job i did for my plumbing company was $1300 going to be held by them for 120 days and review at 90 if no complaints.

90 days later i call and ask for a review they say yes amd have me change my direct deposit info and i got an email confirmation saying info was changed amd ready for deposit in 72 hours.
72 hours passed no deposit. Called and talked to johnathan and he was awesome and said by midnight or early morning id have my money.
Morning came and nothing. Called and talked to someone who flat out called me a liar about being okayed for deposit and when i said i had emails he put me on hold for 20 min and came back to say it was returned to the customer. I called customer and they sent me statements to prove it was NOT returned. I logged online to nuvei account and see first hand and have screenshots to prove its still there!

They have 1300 dollars of my money that belongs to me and refuse to give it to me for no reason.

I called emailed the corp. Office in texas and its been over a month and no responce!

Im a small plumbing company and still new so every penny is needed to keep going! Nuveis actions costed me my home, several thousand dollars in work and almost costed me my business!

I am going to make it known on every review board with the BBB and already contacted my states attorney general whom has reached out to nuvei for a settlement and they continue to ignore. I know im not the only one who they have done this too!

They are crooks, proven liars, con artists, and prey on small companies who dont have the ability to fight back! I have to take them to court where i will take all the emails. Statements, recorded phone calls, screenshots and have it court ordered for them to pay me! And then i sue for all financial damages they have caused. All over $1300!

All they had to do is return my money that is mine! Now im going to help anyone who needs it and send them all the evidence i have to help get thousands more paid to those that have been robbed.

Please feel free to email me

An agent came to my store to setup account with them. He said he will almost cut half of the price what im paying with moneris. He said the debit machine is only $25 per month and 4 cent transaction, 1.25% on visa or master card. He has promise that. After few months later, I saw my account with was withdrawn all kinds of charges. My monthly charge was apx $220. which was oaky with me. My quarterly charges were almost doubled. Amount of $375. Plus the agent lie about debit machine. I was paying $60 per month instead of $25. Agent told me this is only 3year contract with pivotal payment and after 3year for me to keep the debit machine. Lease to own. Which is not ture. Im getting ripped off from this guy really bad. This is BS. I will do something about this.

No response from Nuvei after following up.

We regret purchasing a terminal from Nuvei and find ourselves looking for a new merchant provided.

For the first time ever we were charged a $139 fee without notice, and Nuvei, after many conversations, has decided not to refund any customers for this charge –

We are cancelling our account and moving onto someone else – which in itself will cost us a new setup fee – but this is just wrong –

I won’t continue to do business with a company like this –
