Formerly Retriever of Ohio

National Payment Corporation is a merchant account provider headquartered in Waterville, Ohio. The company operated for almost 20 years as “Retriever of Ohio” (goretriever.com, teamnpc.com), but it appears to have shifted its branding to the National Payment Corporation name over the past five years or so. Retriever of Ohio took its name from a now-defunct large ISO of National Processing Company (NPC) called Retriever Payment Systems. Founded in 1993, the original Retriever Payment Systems was purchased by Iron Triangle Payment Systems in 2006 and subsequently converted into a subsidiary of National Processing Company (NPC). Although the original Retriever Payment Systems is no longer active, there are multiple independent sales offices across the country that still use the Retriever name and logo. Retriever of Ohio was one of those locations. A few of the other independent Retriever offices are listed below:

National Payment Corporation is not affiliated with any of the locations listed above, and it does not report to a larger corporate entity called Retriever Payment Systems. It is a fully independent merchant account provider and this review will treat it as such.

Low Complaint Volume

We are currently unable to locate any National Payment Corporation complaints that accuse the company of being a scam or a ripoff. There are a large number of complaints attributed to Retriever Payment Systems overall, and it’s possible that some of these were directed at the Ohio office, but none of the available complaints specifically refer to the Ohio location. Additionally, as an independent brand, National Payment Corporation has not generated its own negative reviews. We will therefore assume that National Payment Corporation offers quality customer support and generally does not engage in deceptive sales tactics.

We have not found any outstanding class-action lawsuits or FTC complaints filed against National Payment Corporation. Dissatisfied merchants who wish to pursue a non-litigious course of action against the company should consider reporting it to the relevant supervisory organizations.

What Merchants Say

The company also has 0 reviews filed with the BBB in the last 36 months. Prior to that period, the last informal review described a positive experience using the company:

I would like to highly recommend National Payment Corporation. I am using their new Swipe Simple credit card processor on my cell phone. I have a company that exhibits at trade shows and take orders from customers. This was the best experience I have had using a credit card processor since I opened my business. It is extremely easy and the customer support has been outstanding. They spend many hours on the phone with me helping me setup the processor and explaining its features. I even called them last night from my trade show because I had a question. They were wonderful and answered my questions quickly and were very professional.

Customer service is an important aspect of resolving issues that arise with merchant accounts. Merchant account providers exhibiting excellent customer service are an important consideration for any business.

An “A” Performance Overall

Given National Payment Corporation’s clean complaint record, we agree with the BBB’s rating at this time, but merchants should be aware that there are reasons to be skeptical of the BBB’s reviews.

Three-Year Agreement

According to multiple complaints, an early version of the standard National Payment Corporation contract was an automatically renewing three-year agreement through National Processing Company with an early termination fee of at least $250, a PCI Compliance fee of $49-$180 per year, an annual fee of $99, PCI non-compliance fees of $19.95 per month, and other smaller fees.

National Payment Corporation Pricing

Despite advertising low rates and savings, National Payment Corporation does not disclose its rates other than listing that they start at 1.35%. As a registered ISO of WorldPay it is probable that its rates mirror theirs. WorldPay advertises rates of 2.90% plus $0.30 for swiped transactions and 3.30% plus $0.30 for those that are keyed in. However, a company representative has informed us that National Payment Corporation does not charge an early termination fee to the majority of its merchants and only charges the $99 annual fee on a case-by-case basis. The same representative stated that National Payment Corporation discourages merchants from leasing equipment and is no longer partnered with Northern Leasing Systems for its equipment leases.

Virtual Terminal and Payment Gateway Pricing

In addition to its storefront payment processing services, National Payment Corporation also dedicates a portion of its website to advertising its virtual terminal and payment gateway services, provided by Authorize.Net. A typical merchant agreement through Authorize.Net includes a transaction rate of 2.90% plus $0.30, a gateway fee of $25 per month, and a batch fee of $0.15. However, as a reseller of its services, Leaders Merchant Services reserves the right to alter these terms and conditions.

Level 2 and Level 3 Processing Services

In addition to its traditional merchant services, National Payment Corporation also advertises that it provides Level 2 and Level 3 processing for B2B and B2G transactions. Level 2 and Level 3 processing rely upon different interchange rates than traditional consumer credit transactions. Accommodating those rates requires different payment processing technology from a merchant account provider to transmit the amount of data required to facilitate the transactions. These services are reserved for B2B and B2G purchases that utilize corporate credit cards.

An “A” Overall

Given the information provided by this representative and the lack of complaints specifically directed toward National Payment Corporation, we have assigned the company an “A” rating in this category. Still, National Payment Corporation is not considered to be one of the cheapest merchant accounts available.

Inside and Outside Sales Staff

National Payment Corporation appears to utilize a combination of in-house agents, telemarketing, and independent sales agents to market its services. Generally speaking, this combination usually results in high complaint rates for a company, but we are currently unable to find any National Payment Corporation reviews that accuse the company’s sales agents of deceptive sales tactics. There are a large number of sales complaints filed on our overall review of Retriever locations, but it isn’t clear whether any of these complaints are directed at National Payment Corporation.

Previously Advertised Rates

At the time of a previous update, the National Payment Corporation homepage advertised rates that “start at 1.35%.” A company representative has stated that this figure is the company’s rate for signature debit transactions, but the website made no mention of the higher “Qualified,” “Mid-Qualified” and “Non-Qualified” rates that merchants will pay on the majority of their transactions. We consider this type of rate quoting to be deceptive, since it may give merchants an unrealistic expectation of the rates they will be charged. This rate quote appears to have been removed from the company’s website since its rebranding, so it will no longer negatively impact its score. If you suspect that National Payment Corporation is charging you undisclosed fees, we recommend seeking a third-party statement audit to find and eliminate hidden charges.

National Payment Corporation Review Summary

Our Final Thoughts and Opinions

Solid Option for Most Merchants

National Payment Corporation rates as a reliable merchant services provider according to all available information. Under the Retriever brand, the credit card processor did not appear to be the target of most general Retriever complaints, and it has a clean complaint record both under its own name and with the BBB at this time. Despite the lack of negative reviews about the company, merchants are encouraged to carefully read their full contract terms, to inquire about any possible fees, and to compare the company’s pricing to top overall payment processors.

Wow, I must say that National Payment Corporation has been an absolute game-changer for my business! As a small business owner, managing payments used to be such a headache, but ever since I switched to NPC, it’s been smooth sailing all the way.

Their payment processing solutions are top-notch, and the best part is the ease of use. From the moment I signed up, their team was incredibly helpful, guiding me through the setup process and answering all my questions patiently. They truly value their customers, and that’s something you don’t see every day.

The security measures they have in place give me peace of mind, knowing that my customers’ data and transactions are safe and secure. Plus, the speed at which transactions are processed is impressive – no more long waiting times or frustrating delays.

Another aspect that sets NPC apart is their transparent pricing. No hidden fees or surprises – everything is laid out clearly, making it easy to understand and manage my expenses. It’s refreshing to work with a company that values honesty and integrity.

Since I started using National Payment Corporation, I’ve noticed a significant increase in customer satisfaction. The various payment options they offer, including mobile payments and online invoicing, have made it convenient for my customers to make purchases, leading to more sales for my business.

I highly recommend National Payment Corporation to any business owner looking for reliable and efficient payment solutions. They have exceeded my expectations in every way, and I’m grateful for the positive impact they’ve had on my business.
