Company Overview

National Payment Corporation is a merchant account provider headquartered in Waterville, Ohio. The company operated for almost 20 years as “Retriever of Ohio”, but it appears to have shifted its branding to the National Payment Corporation name over the past five years or so. Retriever of Ohio took its name from a now-defunct large ISO of National Processing Company (NPC) called Retriever Payment Systems. Founded in 1993, the original Retriever Payment Systems was purchased by Iron Triangle Payment Systems in 2006 and subsequently converted into a subsidiary of National Processing Company (NPC). Although the original Retriever Payment Systems is no longer active, there are multiple independent sales offices across the country that still use the Retriever name and logo. Retriever of Ohio was one of those locations. A few of the other independent Retriever offices are listed below:

National Payment Corporation is not affiliated with any of the locations listed above, and it does not report to a larger corporate entity called Retriever Payment Systems. It is a fully independent merchant account provider and this review will treat it as such.

I would like to highly recommend National Payment Corporation. I am using their new Swipe Simple credit card processor on my cell phone. I have a company that exhibits at trade shows and take orders from customers. This was the best experience I have had using a credit card processor since I opened my business. It is extremely easy and the customer support has been outstanding. They spend many hours on the phone with me helping me setup the processor and explaining its features. I even called them last night from my trade show because I had a question. They were wonderful and answered my questions quickly and were very professional.

Customer service is an important aspect of resolving issues that arise with merchant accounts. Merchant account providers exhibiting excellent customer service are an important consideration for any business.

An “A” Performance Overall

A Closer Look at The Contract

Cost & Fees Summary
Cancellation Penalties Yes
Monthly & Annual Fees Yes

Contract Terms of National Payment Corporation

Reviews of National Payment Corporation indicate that earlier contracts were three-year agreements with automatic renewal, managed through National Processing Company. These contracts included an early termination fee of at least $250, yearly PCI Compliance fees ranging from $49 to $180, an annual fee of $99, monthly PCI non-compliance fees of $19.95, among other minor fees.

National Payment Corporation’s Pricing Strategy

While National Payment Corporation promotes its competitive rates, stating they begin at 1.35%, the company hasn’t publicly detailed its fee structure. As a registered ISO of WorldPay, its rates could be similar to WorldPay’s, which are 2.90% plus $0.30 for swiped transactions and 3.30% plus $0.30 for keyed transactions. A representative mentioned that most clients aren’t charged an early termination fee and the $99 annual fee is applied selectively. They also indicated that National Payment Corporation advises against equipment leasing and no longer partners with Northern Leasing Systems for equipment leases.

Virtual Terminal and Payment Gateway Services

National Payment Corporation offers virtual terminal and payment gateway services via Authorize.Net. Typically, Authorize.Net’s agreements involve transaction rates of 2.90% plus $0.30, a monthly gateway fee of $25, and a batch fee of $0.15. However, as a reseller, National Payment Corporation may modify these terms.

Offering Advanced B2B and B2G Processing

National Payment Corporation also provides Level 2 and Level 3 processing services, specifically designed for B2B and B2G transactions. These services utilize different interchange rates and require more advanced payment processing technology to handle the detailed data needed for corporate credit card transactions.

Overall Performance

Considering the representative’s input and the absence of significant complaints about National Payment Corporation, the company is rated “A” in this area. Despite this rating, it’s noted that National Payment Corporation may not be among the most affordable merchant accounts on the market.

Inside and Outside Sales Staff

National Payment Corporation appears to utilize a combination of in-house agents, telemarketing, and independent sales agents to market its services. Generally speaking, this combination usually results in high complaint rates for a company, but we are currently unable to find any National Payment Corporation reviews that accuse the company’s sales agents of deceptive sales tactics. There are a large number of sales complaints filed on our overall review of Retriever locations, but it isn’t clear whether any of these complaints are directed at National Payment Corporation.

Previously Advertised Rates

At the time of a previous update, the National Payment Corporation homepage advertised rates that “start at 1.35%.” A company representative has stated that this figure is the company’s rate for signature debit transactions, but the website made no mention of the higher “Qualified,” “Mid-Qualified” and “Non-Qualified” rates that clients will pay on the majority of their transactions. We consider this type of rate quoting to be deceptive, since it may give businesses an unrealistic expectation of the rates they will be charged. This rate quote appears to have been removed from the company’s website since its rebranding, so it will no longer negatively impact its score. If you suspect that National Payment Corporation is charging you undisclosed fees, we recommend seeking a third-party statement audit to find and eliminate hidden charges.

Our Final Thoughts

National Payment Corporation rates as a reliable credit card processing provider according to all available information. Under the Retriever brand, the credit card processor did not appear to be the target of most general Retriever complaints, and it has a clean complaint record both under its own name and with the BBB at this time. Despite the lack of negative reviews about the company, readers are encouraged to carefully read their full contract terms, inquire about any possible fees, and compare the company’s pricing to top overall payment processors.

Wow, I must say that National Payment Corporation has been an absolute game-changer for my business! As a small business owner, managing payments used to be such a headache, but ever since I switched to NPC, it’s been smooth sailing all the way.

Their payment processing solutions are top-notch, and the best part is the ease of use. From the moment I signed up, their team was incredibly helpful, guiding me through the setup process and answering all my questions patiently. They truly value their customers, and that’s something you don’t see every day.

The security measures they have in place give me peace of mind, knowing that my customers’ data and transactions are safe and secure. Plus, the speed at which transactions are processed is impressive – no more long waiting times or frustrating delays.

Another aspect that sets NPC apart is their transparent pricing. No hidden fees or surprises – everything is laid out clearly, making it easy to understand and manage my expenses. It’s refreshing to work with a company that values honesty and integrity.

Since I started using National Payment Corporation, I’ve noticed a significant increase in customer satisfaction. The various payment options they offer, including mobile payments and online invoicing, have made it convenient for my customers to make purchases, leading to more sales for my business.

I highly recommend National Payment Corporation to any business owner looking for reliable and efficient payment solutions. They have exceeded my expectations in every way, and I’m grateful for the positive impact they’ve had on my business.
