Company Overview

Founded in 1970, Worldline is a French multinational credit and debit card payment and transactional services company. Previously known as Atos Worldline, in 2019 the company gained financial autonomy as a result of the Atos Group redistributing a portion of its Worldline shares back to shareholders. Worldline is a sizable European merchant services company, likely the largest in Europe. It boasts an estimated 20,000 employees and processes billions in transactions annually.

In 2018 Worldline began a series of acquisitions starting with SIX Payment Services. Since 2020, The company has acquired the French point-of-sale hardware company, Ingenico, as well as Czech payment gateway specialists GoPay. Worldline now also owns Canadian-based payment processor Bambora, which had been acquired by Ingenico. While SIX Payment Services initially continued to function under its original business name, it now appears that Worldline is consolidating all of its acquisitions under its own name and phasing out subsidiary brands.

In 2022, Wordline closed on a commercial acquiring license with ANZ Bank of Australia and completed a partnership with BNL and acquired Axepta of Italy. They also became the first acquirer to enter a full-scale multi-country integration with Alipay+. Worldline also sold its terminal business to Apollo Funds while maintaining a relationship with the company. Further, Worldline acquired much of Eurobank’s business, partnered with self-check-in company Myra, partnered with Amdoc to provide subscription services, partnered with Splitit for next-gen installment payments, acquired a 40% stake in Online Payment Platform, and acquired part of Banco Desio.

2023 saw even more expansion from Worldline, including partnerships with ING, Voidu, Crédit Agricole, and BNP Paribas.

No Serious Complaints as Bambora or Ingenico

There are very few negative Worldline reviews for a company of its size, which isn’t surprising considering the young age of the brand. Looking at the former companies that were acquired by Worldline, we also see very few major complaints. Bambora and Ingenico were rated as solid choices for payment processing in our previous reviews. If you have a Worldline review of your own, please leave it in the comments below.

Equipment Concerns as Atos Worldline

Stemming from earlier complaints registered to Atos Worldline, there are a handful of reports of faulty point-of-sale systems and other payment terminal problems. We were able to locate over half a dozen reports of equipment issues. This feedback might be one of the contributing factors to Worldline attempting to move away from physical point-of-sale systems.

Worldline Lawsuits, Fines, & Government Actions

We have not found any outstanding class-action lawsuits or FTC complaints filed against Worldline. Dissatisfied clients who wish to pursue a non-litigious course of action against the company should consider reporting it to the relevant supervisory organizations and by leaving a review of your own in the comment section of this article below.

Ingenico Payments became party to a lawsuit filed in the Northern District of Georgia on December 20, 2018. The plaintiff of the suit, AnywhereCommerce, alleges that Ingenico committed illegal business practices during the bidding process to acquire a First Data contract for the sale of POS equipment. The suit also alleges that Ingenico illegally acquired trade secrets from Hong Kong-based POS equipment manufacturer BBPOS, who had previously negotiated a license agreement with AnywhereCommerce.

Worldline’s customer service options vary heavily by region. Worldline maintains dozens of offices throughout the world, and generally the local contact number is available through their website. Canadian business owners might find themselves contacting a Bambora office, while the rest of the Americas were potentially served by Ingenico offices.

Our Worldline Review Summary

Our Final Thoughts

Worldline is a massive European credit card processing provider. The company has very few customer reviews reporting service-related issues. It has recently begun acquiring companies around the world to increase its market share. Worldline has grown quickly in recent years and it will be interesting to see how well they fold some of their previous brands into one name. Ingenico was a massive European merchant account provider on its own, with Bambora also operating in multiple countries. The lack of transparent pricing information is always concerning, but Worldline seems to have kept a relatively clean record, especially for a company of its size. It will also be interesting to see if they can maintain their customer service quality, something that other large conglomerates and mergers have struggled with.
