Company Overview

Vend is a cloud-based point-of-sale (POS) system for iPad, PC, and Mac that was originally created in Auckland, New Zealand, but has since expanded to include headquarters in San Francisco, Melbourne, and Toronto.

In 2021, Vend was purchased by Lightspeed. It appears the Vend brand is still operating, but there are indicators that it may be absorbed into Lightspeed.

Vend Point of Sale

As a cloud-based POS, Vend enables merchants to accept debit cards, credit cards, cash, and other forms of payment at a physical location using only an iPad, laptop, or desktop computer. The software also offers e-commerce solutions, inventory management, and real-time reporting.

Vend POS Integrated Payment Partners

Vend is partnered with WorldPay, Moneris, PayPal, Square, Chase, Paymentsense, iZettle, Tyro, Payment Express, Commonwealth Bank, Afterpay, Yoco, Verifone, and SmartPay as its integrated merchant account providers, but merchants can use other payment processors alongside Vend without a full integration. Vend formerly allowed merchants to integrate their payments with Vend via an Authorize.Net payment gateway, but it has since done away with this compatibility for new merchants.

Vend POS Mobile Payment Solutions

Recognizing the importance of mobile commerce in the contemporary business landscape, Vend POS offers a robust mobile payment service. This service allows businesses to accept and process card payments using a mobile device. It provides flexibility and convenience, especially to businesses that operate outside traditional retail spaces.

Vend POS E-Commerce Services

Given the growth of online shopping, Vend POS provides a secure online payment processing service. Through their reliable online payment gateway, businesses can handle online transactions securely and efficiently, meeting the needs of a digitally connected consumer base.

Vend POS Virtual Terminal Services

For businesses that handle transactions via mail or phone orders, Vend POS's virtual terminal service is a valuable offering. This feature allows businesses to manually enter card details into a secure online system, providing a flexible solution for processing remote payments.

Location & Ownership

Vend POS was founded in 2010 and currently maintains its U.S. headquarters at 2615 Main Avenue, Durango, CO 81301 and lists offices in Melbourne, Toronto, Auckland, and London.  Vaughan Rowsell is the founder and Ana Wight is the CEO of Vend. Alexander Fala is the former CEO of Vend. Jean Paul Chauvet is the CEO of Lightspeed.

Vend POS Customer Reviews

Here's What Their Clients Say

Customer Reviews Summary
Total Online Complaints 25+
Live Customer Support Yes
Most Common Complaint Product Malfunctions
Recent Lawsuits No

Low-to-Moderate Complaint Total

We have located more than 25 negative Vend reviews on this and other consumer protection websites, none of which accuse the service of being a scam or ripoff. Common complaints include software malfunctions, hardware incompatibility, poor customer service, and limited feature offerings from Vend. In many cases, it’s difficult to determine whether the issues are stemming from Vend itself, from a local problem with the merchant’s equipment, or from user error. In addition, there are far more positive reviews of the Vend system and the customer support provided by the company than there are negative reviews, indicating that the majority of users are satisfied with Vend. In general, it seems that merchants can avoid negative experiences by ensuring that Vend will have the functions and compatibility that they require before purchasing the software. If you have your own Vend review to make, please do so in the comments below.

Vend Lawsuits

We have not found any outstanding class-action lawsuits or FTC complaints filed against Vend. Dissatisfied clients who wish to pursue a non-litigious course of action against the company should consider reporting it to the relevant supervisory organizations.

Vend was the target of a patent-troll suit brought in 2019. These cases are often costly and time-consuming, however details are scarce.

Vend Customer Support Options

Vend offers a level of support we expect of top-rated merchant account providers for great customer service. This is an improvement over the company’s previous options and a likely cause for its slowing complaint rate.

Multiple Pricing Plans

Vend is priced at three different tiers, and the service’s cost increases in proportion to a business’ size and number of locations. Its payment processing fees will vary depending on whether a client chooses one of Vend’s integrated payment partners or opts to use their own third-party processor. Vend’s integrated payment partners include WorldPay, Square, PayPal, and CardConnect. The company’s integrated payment partners rates are as high as 2.90% plus $0.30 for swiped transactions and 3.30% plus $0.30 for those which are keyed in. Using a third-party processor may reduce the amount of integrated features available through the Vend platform, and this approach is fittingly referred to as “non-integrated” in Vend’s ad copy. Vend offers discounts for clients who are billed on a yearly basis, and its costs are detailed below.

Vend Lite Plan

Vend’s cheapest plan costs $119 per month ($1,188 if billed annually) per outlet and includes one location, one register, a monthly processing limit of $20,000, Vend’s point of sale app, real-time inventory management, 24/7 phone and online support, sales reporting, and a Xero accounting add-on.

Vend Pro Plan

Vend’s Pro plan costs $159 per month ($1,548 if billed annually) per outlet and includes everything in the Lite plan plus an increase of up to five locations, unlimited transaction volume, advanced promotions, gift cards, all add-ons, all e-commerce channels, API access, and multi-location retail management.

Vend Enterprise Plan

Vend’s Enterprise plan costs a custom monthly amount and includes all of the features in the Pro plan plus an allowance of more than five locations, a dedicated account manager, and custom onboarding.

Few Contract Complaints

There are currently very few negative Vend reviews to be found online regarding Vend’s contract terms and pricing, and the fact that the company offers a lean but free trial version means that merchants can try it out with minimal risk. Vend claims that businesses can obtain lower-than-average rates through its partner processors, which could help its pricing compete with the cheapest merchant accounts. If you have had any experience with Vend’s costs and terms, please share it in the comment section below this review.

In-House Sales Team

Vend appears to market its services primarily through conventional advertising and an in-house sales staff. Vend does not appear to employ independently contracted sales agents, and there are no Vend complaints that accuse the company’s representatives of deceptive sales tactics. If you suspect that Vend is overcharging you, you can double-check your bill with a third-party statement audit.

No Deceptive Quotes

Vend lists its pricing clearly on its website and does not promote any misleading rate quotes or unrealistic guarantees. Given the lack of red flags in the company’s official marketing materials and the absence of client complaints about its sales team, we have assigned it an “A” in this category.

Our Vend POS Review Summary

Our Final Thoughts

Vend rates as a quality cloud-based credit card processing POS system for businesses of most sizes and types. The service has received praise for its ease of use, affordability, and software integration capabilities, but some clients have expressed a desire for a more reliable, versatile system overall. Business owners should compare Vend’s pricing and features to those offered by the top-rated POS providers for iPad in order to obtain the best deal.

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. Rude and unhelpful. None of their staff knows their product and are all VERY condescending. They lied about hidden costs multiple times. They dodge phone calls. Please, do not use.

Very poor support, no empathy and trial function incomplete, so one is forced to activate the account ant pay to be able to test functions.

Hi Phillip and anyone else reading this,

Thanks for the glowing review, always nice to get feedback and it’s clear you’ve done your homework! As for the critique on feature offerings, we agree there are some features missing from Vend right now but with helpful feedback from the community we’re adding new things every month. The company is growing quickly and with that comes new avenues for feature development and integration with third-party technology. Pretty soon we also hope to bump that 20/6 phone coverage up to 24/7 as well. It’s an exciting time to be in retail and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.

If anyone reading this would like to know more check out our site (www.vendhq.com) or feel free to contact me directly: [email protected]

    Cheers,
    Oli – Vend Community Support
